Generate GEDCOM from WikiTree for RootsMagic System

Before joining WikiTree, I maintained genealogy on RootsMagic a PC based software package.  I would like to update my profiles and generate a GEDCOM to keep RootsMagic up to date. RM produces good reports and I like to use them to keep family members posted.

Wikitree imports and exports a limited number of fields. (just the basics.) All other fields (and sources) end up as text in the narrative and as such end up -- when exported from wikitree and imported into RM or any other software program -- as text in the person's Notes field. Therefore, it doesn't make a lot of sense to try to import an exported wikitree gedcom into an offline genealogy software program.

Fixing this, I believe would require a major rewrite of wikitree's underlying software to include multiple fields with sources attached to each field. I don't think we'll ever see such a rewrite.

I recommend that you export a very small GEDCOM (find someone with only a few descendants) and then import that into a new empty RootsMagic database. Then you can open another database and compare to see them side by side. I brought a few profiles over that way. It could be how sources were cited, all mine ended up as a very long entry for the person notes. So....I'm keeping parallel works (I only have about 2000 in RootsMagic, a few of them are on WikiTree.

I did (accidentally) bring down a fairly large GEDCOM of an ancestor I found on WikiTree, again in a separate database. Very valuable to see what is in the Problem List.

You could also try to invite them to Wiki so they can help fill in your blanks and also they can help others.
