Charles Scott (Scot) was born in Crichton, Midlothian, Scotland in April 1802.  He is listed on the 1880 Census in Atchison, Kansas.  How can I find out when he left Scotland?  Also - was he married and did he have any family?  Thanks.

Thank you Betty.  This seems to be the right person.  There are more children than I had known about, and it seems that Catherine and James may be twins.  I have found 2 other sets of twins in the family tree.

Sorry this comment should have been for the first answer you gave me.  The Charles Scott from Midlothian.
Thanks again Betty.  This is the person that I think is my relative.  Sorry about putting my reply against the other Charles Scott.

Your information has been really helpful.
You're welcome. I still post to the wrong answer. No worries.

Betty

In the 1870 census he is living in Atchison, Kanas with his wife & children:

Household Members:
Name Age
Charles Scott 68
Elizabeth Scott 55
James Scott 21
Katie Scott 21
Jennie Scott 16

If they emigrated around the end of 1860, they'd miss the census in both countries.
They would not miss the 1870 US Census
I meant the 1860 US and 1861 UK.  Some emigrants were very inconsiderate with their timing.

I think this is his FindAGrave memorial:  http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=74181354.

There are more of the family in the same cemetery:  http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&GRid=74181354&CRid=93155&

Hello,

It is difficult to follow family over seas. You can write the church he belonged to they often keep births , etc records for centuries.

You can also write to town historian for info. You would have to look up on computer for that. You  can go to UK site and also try to look him up there. Also immigration records on census site.

hope this helps some.

Sincerely

kim
