How did Horace Billings Skinner acquire the Billings name as a middle name?

I find Horace Billings Skinner on my Mothers geneology, She was Annie Ruth Skinner daughter of Morgan Vaughn Skinner and Alice Ann Johnson Skinner of Provo,UT. My mother married Ezra Golden Billings and we have often wondered how the Billings name come to fit into our Skinner geneology.

Your SKINNER family line is very well documented - I looked at the ancestors of HORACE BILLINGS SKINNER and could find no "BILLINGS" surnames.  Perhaps he was named BILLINGS after a close family friend.

born Feb 28, 1809 in Putney, Windham Co., Vermont

died Nov 13 1887 in Provo, Utah Co., Utah

Father - BRITTON SKINNER

Mother - SARAH EASTERBROOK

First wife was ELEANOR CEASE, who he married on Mar 20, 1833 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio.

His second wife, was JANE JOHNSON INGLEFIELD.

"On February 7, 1846 HORACE was endowed in the Nauvoo Temple; in 1852 he journeyed with the John B Walker Company to the Salt Lake Valley".
