August Sourcerers Challenge [closed]

Question

Thank you so much to everyone who participated in July's Sourcerers Challenge. The July Top Sourcerer was Karen Tobo with <drum roll> 400 profiles improved. WOW! To see the rest of the results, check out the Sourcerers Challenge page.

On to August's challenge:

We want to give our members some incentive, even more than the fact that we're making our tree that much better and reliable, and we'd like to encourage you all to add good sources to profiles. Good can be debatable, it's true, but at this point we're thinking anything other than referencing just another tree is good, so census data, BMD records/index references, family bible references, military documents, land documents, wills, etc. all help us with having a better sourced tree.

Each month we'll post in G2G to start up the month's challenge. You come and post the profile you've added source(s) to (at least the profile number/name, if not a link to it) as well as what sources you added and at the end of the month, we'll tally for a winner. You only need to answer the post once, and just edit your post to add your new profiles. To continue to post once your answer reaches it's max, just comment on your own post. See last month's challenge for examples.

* All profiles improved must come from the Unsourced categories <http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Unsourced_Profiles> or be already present on WikiTree and unsourced-you can't create new profiles and add sources just to up your tally. The hope and goal is to improve the numbers already on WikiTree that need sources. Adding sources will help merges happen, too, which will improve our tree. Showing folks what sources you're using helps newer researchers see just what's available out there for us to access.

* The tally is of profiles improved, not sources added.

* If you attempt to add sources to a profile and just cannot find any, please add a note under a section like === Research Notes === giving where you tried to find records and you can sign it with the four tildes (~~~~) so the date is applied as well. Something like "Looked for John in the US Census records for 1900-1940 and couldn't find him on FamilySearch or Ancestry" would be fine. Or, "Searched google for an obituary and didn't find one." That way the next researcher knows where to start.

* If the only source on a profile is "Ancestry tree" or "Geni.com" it can count as unsourced, and you can add better sources to it to count in your tally.

Any suggestions for dealing with unsourced profiles that cannot be edited?

If I have a source for a green public profile, I leave it as a public comment, suggesting the manager add it as a source and remove the category. If I get no response, then I would start the unresponsive manager process. If the manager, responds during the steps, the problem can be solved.

If it's a newish profile, maybe a simple reminder that's it's listed as unsourced, could be left in the public messages

Thanks, Anne.  I know the challenge is for the total number of profiles improved, but I made it my personal goal to add as many sources as I could to each one.  My record was ten sources for one profile, but I also had several with eight or nine sources.

Good grief!  Didn't know this existed  prior to today.  Have been cleaning up tons of profiles left by Robert Blais that had no sources listed, since I know he used Drouin collection they are easy for me to retrace and fill in dates and place names and tie them in to where they belong.  So this is my source for most of them:   Quebec, Vital and Church Records (Drouin Collection), 1621-1997

No way can I list them all, have been doing this for months, and initiating merges when appropriate.

Oh I've been at it as usual, I just don't keep track of them to list here.  Does merging profiles count in this?  Some that did not have source were actually duplicates of mine for which I did have source?

Though merging profiles doesn't count in the challenge, it certainly helps to improve WikiTree.  I recommended merges of several profiles, too, and am still waiting for a few of the profile managers to approve them.

And you're right about many unsourced profiles that do not have the Unsourced category - those all count.  From the profiles that I sourced, I often discovered other family members did not have sources, but didn't have the tag.  Finding a marriage record let me source both the bride and groom, and a census record often allowed me to source several people.

So how do these profiles get their 'unsourced' tags?  Is somebody going through profiles one by one or what?  Tedious would not begin to describe that job if that is the case.

There is no automatic way to do it.  Whenever someone sees a profile that has no sources, we can add the "Unsourced" category.  Nobody is going through the profiles systematically because, as you said, tedious would not begin to describe that job.  Since there are several million profiles and only a couple thousand that are tagged, you know the tagged profiles are only the tip of the iceburg.  That's why this challenge includes all unsourced profiles, whether they have the unsourced category or not.

Someone said recently that if every member of WikiTree joined in the challenge and sourced just a few unsourced profiles, the entire site would be sourced.  That's why I decided to encourage people who had worked on this challenge previously to join again.

Danielle, besides all the industrious little bees attaching "Unsourced" to profiles, as of sometime in the not too distant past, "unsourced" does get automatically attached to profiles created without sources as they are created. Try it the next time you create a new profile. Don't put in any sources in the sources box and no <ref>s in the bio, the profile gets an auto tag "unsourced"
