Thomas William Larcombe, s/o John and Matilda. Born Plymouth 1878.  I have many facts on him, but the only Larcombe in Royal Garrison Artillery listed as having died in WW1 came from Wales of different parents. Please can anyone help. A Thomas William Larcombe died Totnes 1963 who was the same age as our TWL would have been. Could it have been that he did not die in WW1 but came back incognito?  Can anyone tell me anything about this other Thomas William Larcombe?

I can give a lot more information, also about his brother Robert who also died WW1. Their parents were John (station master Otterton) and Matilda nee Paull.

I had some information from Kevin Asplin who has records of the RGA:

This man joined the RGA in 1898 and did 12 years of service before being discharged in  1919 in India.  There is no indicatgion of further service after 1910.  There is a Thomas Larcombe who was married in Australia in 1911 and died there in 1920... but I can't check him as my subscription does not cover this.

I found   Mr & Mrs Larcombe arrived in Freemantle in Feb 1910.  And subsequently I found from Indiafamily (the India Office records) a marriage in 19199 of Thomas Larcombe, father John Larcombe, to Anna Maria, daughtger of Daniel (no last name given), Bride 18 and Groom 41, in Bhusaval, Bombay.  Right age, right father's name.  In which case he didn't come back at the end of WW1, probably didn't serve in it either, or go to Australia.

The death of Thomas W Larcombe in Totnes, 1963, records his age as 84, giving a birth year of c1879. Searching Births throughout England & Wales between 1872 & 1882 for Thomas Larcombe reveals only four; only one of which is John W --- John William Larcombe b 1878. (Beaminster 5a/382 q September 1878). Beaminster spans the boundaries of Dorset & Somerset.

Dorset Parish records has an baptism entry for Thomas William Larkin  for 1 September 1878, Halstock, Dorset, the son of John & Matilda Larcombe. (

Thomas  appears in 1891 census with his parents, but 1901 & 1911 census seem silent on his wherabouts, likewise any marriage record prior to WW1.

Commonwealth War Graves are silent on his casualty.

It seems a distinct possibilty that the 1963 death is the same Thomas William Larcombe. My advice would be to purchase the death certificate and try to piece back the personal history

John and Matilda Larcombe are my Gt Gt Grandparents.  There daughter Jessie (baptised Laura Jessie) was the mother of my Grandmother, who was raised by John and Matilda from 4 to 14 years.   Matilda acted as the local midwife and brought home a baby boy when a family couldn't cope.  He was named John.  There was Alice, Jessie, Thomas, Robert, James, Frederick, John, a child that died,   Thomas William and Laura Jessie were both baptised on the same day (1st September 1878)

Would love to hear from you
