Looking for the parents of Joseph Wood from WV born in 1892

Question

I am looking for any information on my 2nd great grandfather Joe Woods. His marriage license says he was born in Wyoming County WV. It lists his father as J.S. and has a line drawn through the mother space. He was married to Melvina Moran. Her name shows up as Vina on their marriage license. He was a preacher. I had spoken with his granddaughter and she had told me that she was told he was born in an Indian tribe near Charlestown. (There are rumors of Indian tribes along the river banks that lived in WV for quite some time hiding from government officials.) So I cannot find anything about him. She said she thought he was half native or a quarter, but she wasn't sure. (She had thought his wife may have been part native and we found out she was right.) Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you

Thank you so very much!!!!! You have given me so much more to work with. Violet Wood was my Great-Grandma. Why would his father only give J.S. as his initials? Also, I noticed neither his father nor his mother have the name Wood. Could he have been adopted or sent to English school for the natives? (Melvina's grandmom was native and is believed to be a Cherokee descendant of John Watts Young Tassel but I have not found any census records or records from the 1700s.) Anyway, the fact that the mother-in-law lived with Joe and Melvina seems also native. I know the census was not allowed to state Indian- only white or colored. Thanks so much!
