Thought we were German, maybe we're Swiss

Family legend has been we were from what is now Germany.  Recent research, however, traces the Ockerman's to New Bern, NC in mid-1700's, which raises the prospect that we could be part of the Swiss group which help found that town.  What are some good sources on Swiss immigrants? or, from the other side, emigrants?  Thanks
