Hi Michael,

I created a free space profile for my Italian family side and have being doing research for a long time.

We are now a mixed family which can still be found in Italy, but also in Brazil and Canada.

If you wanna add us to your Italian one name studies.

Cheers,

Regis Giampersa
Thank you Regis!  That's exactly what we want - done!

I haven't gotten very far on this.  The farthest ancestor I have is http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Fuoco-16

If you need any help, I can try.  Location categories really need to be standardized for Italy.  With assistance/guidance regarding set up (thirteen regions?)  I would be happy to assist.  And a question as well...do we mirror English with Italian language categories?  Just a thought.

Thank you for sharing your name study!  I will add it to the Italian_roots list shortly.

You raise several important points.   I have been going with Italian spelling of place names when possible.  This may run contrary to other practices.   This is worthy of it's own Q/discussion space. I look forward to hearing how it is handled generally in other groups.

I think categories are set up for the twenty regions of Italy already (I will double check). So it would be good for us to put that front and center, and to make sure we set up subcategories as well.  We learn as we go and we may have to make adjustments.  Hopefully it won't be too painful!
Most countries do not include the country after the region/state. but are linked to the country.  The only exceptions that I have run across so far to this was Scotland (that's been corrected) New Zealand and India.

There would need to be corrections made to most categories if this standard is adopted to match other countries and formats.  It wouldn't take too long to correct since there aren't many established yet.  It's okay to leave it with the country, but it is not consistent with the majority of the other countries.  And that consistency is something that categorization project is working towards.

Also, categorization project is trying to create a mirror category in English as well the language of choice.  Which I do not know Italia.

http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Italy and http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Italia  In theory if a category is created in one language another category is created or mirrored in the other language and then preferably cross referenced to the other mirror category so they are linked.  I'll add the categorization tag to the question so we can get that project to give us some advise.
I need to better understand how the mirror categories work.   I will study further the links you shared.  Thank you for this!
I am thinking it would be worthwhile to add a category "Italian_name_studies" to be added to each One_Name_Study for Italian surname project pages.   Thoughts?
Absolutely.  And I just remembered that Phil Smith was going to be offline for a bit...I sent him an email and usually he's right on top of anything to do with categories.  Let me see who I can find that might know his mindset from the cat project...
Nae and Michael (and others with Italian roots),

please do note that a considerable amount of work was already put in place to structure locations in Italy. So I can't understand your comment. All regions are in place, we have an agreed structure as to how we handle Italian and English spellings.

Please do consider to use G2G search functionality before you do changes that might destroy the good work of several individuals that put countless hours into it.

Thanks!

My wife is half Italian (makes me Italian by marriage). Her grandparents were born in the 1860's (not a typo). Is there anyone in the project who knows about Italian records? We've been trying for years to find out more about her Italian family. BTW, I would be interested in joining the roots project.

There is quite a burgeoning collection of Italian records at FamilySearch !

Enjoy !

And don't forget the wikitree app that helps match records between wikitree profiles and familysearch records!
In terms of research on Italian records and supporting each other and especially those new to researching their Italian heritage - we will need to assemble some informative documents and advice.

But as a starting point - as with any immigrant ancestor - we want to figure out as much from what we can access where they arrived that may point us to the place they were from.   If we know the town of origin we are in much better shape to explore next steps.   Sometimes this is already known as a matter of family history and shared stories, other times we find it through naturalization records, arrival / immigration records.   (Or more lucky yet:  passports and actual vital records documents in the family treasury!)

Census documents tend to report at the country level, which is more helpful in a German context when let's say Bavaria and Baden were separate "countries" rather than separate states of Germany.  For Italy it doesn't help so much.

FamilySearch.org also works in cooperation with the Italian govt. in an effort to digitize many records from regional and commune archives.   Not all localities are covered yet.    In my case Villa Santa Lucia degli Abruzzi is there, but several months ago Ferruzzano wasnt.  (Havent checked back lately).    In this case you would need to develop some familiarity not only with Italian terms likely to be found on vital records, but also the Italian formal handwriting of the period.    FamilySearch has some resources on that.  To reiterate, you don't need to speak Italian fluently - you just need to understand some key words for basic research.  Some records and some details of course may require translation to understand what is going on - but you will be surprised how far you can get!

Right now if you need translation help and you have some documents, you might post a request on the G2G here, or I can recommend some other places or perhaps take a look myself.  My Italian is pretty decent for genealogical purposes.
Last month a template was created for Italian Roots, and this month we've attained official project status.  I invite you to tag the profiles you manage that have Italian heritage with the template     {{Italian Roots}}

Michael,

not sure if you went through the list of One_Name_Study as that's the place to find all Italian ones. Much easier than to ask people to re-submit but anyway, here's my work:

Thank you for sharing - I will add yours when I return later today.

It is certainly my plan to go through that list to see which names may be Italian - but in general - people would not need to "resubmit" or re-do any work.

My request serves a function of making people aware of the #Italian_roots effort and inviting their involvement - and possibly encouraging others to do a One_Name_Study (and One_Place_Study) if it meets their needs.

It is important that we make our work more visible to each other.

Thanks again!
