In the 1880 census, they are in Fountain Green, Hancock Co., Illinois, and the data suggests they were not married in Illinois, and he may have been born as early as 1825:

Margaret, 44 [b 1836], wife, born Virginia of Pennsylvania-born parents

John H., 24 [b 1856], son, at home, born Virginia... suggesting that Jacob and Margaret were married in Virginia OR that Jacob had an earlier wife, mother of this John.

Since he married about 1869, he's likely to be found single in 1860 and 1850 censuses-- and possibly still with his parents.  Have you found his census records yet? 

The next thing you should seek is his marriage record. Some included names of parents. If not in any online indexes, seek the marriage records of the church where his children were likely baptized or christened. 

Then, you should also seek his death certificate if he died at a time when they were issued.

Where you ever able to identify Jacob Campbell's parents?  I have been looking for this link as well, and trying to fingure out where they came from and when they arrived in VA.
