Mary (Isabel) fitz Alan, d. 29 Aug 1396; [m.] John Lestrange [sic.], b. c Easter 1322, d. 12 May 1361, MP 1360, 4th Lord Strange of Blackmere. [Magna Charta Sureties]

---------------

Note: In "Some corrections and additions to the Complete Peerage", www. medievalgenalogy.org.uk, it states "Mary was the daughter of Edmund, the 9th Earl of Arundel, not Richard the 10th Earl (see Arundel, vol 1, p. 244, note b)." This would also correct Burke's as well any other book that uses CP as a source.

Following is the discussion of the evidence:

When the Church concocted the 10th Earl's annulment, they explained away the child by saying he'd been forced by violence to consummate the marriage.  Two children would have been a bit harder to explain away.

Some sources (like Tout in the old DNB) say that Richard and Isabel had one child, a daughter.  This is a deliberate lie.  The child was of course the son Edmund, raised to his teens as the heir, then suddenly bastardized and disinherited.

The whole annulment episode was pretty disgusting.  But the descendants of Richard's 2nd marriage included the Dukes of Norfolk, the premier aristos of England.  Best not to mention anything embarrassing.  Also best not to supply ammunition to the lefties, they were revolting enough already.

Thank you, RJ Horace, for your answer to the question! Second question, in the case Mary Isabel FitzAlan is your 17th great grandmother, would that be considered as a break in your linage? :-)

If Mary/Isabel is moved up a generation, you lose the Despenser connection, that's all.
Thank you, RJ Horace, I appreciate you sharing your knowledge! :-)
