What's the REAL story about Daniel Whitehead's family?

In working on another g2g thread (about Elizabeth (Alcock) Whitehead), I dug into Daniel Whitehead-- many people (and currently so linked on wikitree) believe he was the son of John Whitehead and grandson of Elizabeth (Alcock) Whitehead. And there's quite a mess about his wives and children. A 2000 article in the NY Genealogical & Biographical Record does an excellent analysis. The answer to this question summarizes the results. Daniel Whitehead's profile should be adjusted to align with these findings.

Thanks Jillaine,

I tagged New Netherland Settlers so they can take a look as well.

This is compiled after reviewing Harry Macy, Jr., "The Family of Daniel1 Whitehead: A Century and a Half of Fact and Fiction," in NYGBR, vol 131 (2000), pp 263-275.  (Source for all except where otherwise noted)

Daniel Whitehead [Sr] was born about 1603, based on a 2 Oct 1668 testimony where he gave his age as about 65. (Minutes of the Town Courts of Newton, Long Island, 1656-1690, pub. 1940, p 192, FHL 0484026).  He died in 1668 at Maspeth Kills, Newtown, Long Island.

He arrived in Hempstead, LI, by 1644, one of the earliest proprietors there. In 1656, he moved to Oyster Bay, and was in Maspeth Kills by 1664.

Given his age, he may have had a first wife, name unknown.

He married _____, a daughter, first name unknown, of Thomas Armitage of Hempstead & Oyster Bay. She was the mother of his children Daniel [Jr], Jonathan and David. She died by 1658.

He then married by 1658 young Jean Ireland, daughter of Thomas Ireland, another proprietor of Hempstead, LI. Her identity was discovered in the inventory of Daniel Whitehead's estate. She was the mother of his children Adam, Thomas, Jemima and Elizabeth.

There was no wife Jean or any other name, daughter of Thomas Skidmore. The introduction of this theory was made by Wm. Cornell, without explanation; Skidmore researchers have never found any daughter in their line that married a Whitehead.

After Daniel died, Jean (Ireland) Whitehead, m2 John Ingersoll, and had John, Simon, Daniel and Jane.

I see Daughter Jemima needs a merge as well, she has two profiles with different mothers.
A proposed merge for the 2 Jemima profiles has been sent and is pending.
Daniel also has 2 daughters named Elizabeth. Strangely, when I place both IDs in the match/merge page I can neither compare them nor merge them.  Could someone please try merging these two profiles?

The given name of the daughter of Thomas Armitage, who was the second wife of Daniel, is unknown. Her age can be roughly estimated as she had a brother who graduated from Harvard College in 1660 (hence born circa 1640). It seems impossible that this unnamed Armitage daughter was the mother of Daniel Whitehead, Jr. (1645/6 - 1704) or his younger brothers. She is not known to have left any issue.

Not necessarily. Take a look at the profile of their father Thomas Armitage (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Armitage-250). It is here asserted that he was the father of Manasseh, the son who went to Harvard (born about 1640), as well as two unnamed daughters, the first one (who married Daniel Whitehead) born about 1626, which would make her old enough to be the mother of children born in 1645 and thereafter. This seems entirely reasonable to me - someone born in 1640 could certainly have had a sister 15 years older than himself (in my experience families during this time period often had children over a span of about 20-25 years).
