October Sourcerers Challenge! [closed]

Question

Thank you so much to everyone who participated in September's Sourcerers Challenge. The September Top Sourcerer was Marj Adams with <drum roll> 242 profiles improved. Great work, Marj! 

The current All Time Top Sourcerer is Star Kline with 455 profiles improved. Fantastic contributions, Star.

Onto October's challenge:

We want to give our members some incentive, even more than the fact that we're making our tree that much better and reliable, and we'd like to encourage you all to add good sources to profiles. Good can be debatable, it's true, but at this point we're thinking anything other than referencing just another tree is good, so census data, BMD records/index references, family bible references, military documents, land documents, wills, etc. all help us with having a better sourced tree.

Each month we'll post in G2G to start up the month's challenge. You come and post the profile you've added source(s) to (at least the profile number/name, if not a link to it) as well as what sources you added and at the end of the month, we'll tally for a winner. You only need to answer the post once, and just edit your post to add your new profiles. To continue to post once your answer reaches it's max, just comment on your own post. See last month's challenge for examples.

* All profiles improved must come from the Unsourced categories <http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Unsourced_Profiles> or be already present on WikiTree and unsourced-you can't create new profiles and add sources just to up your tally. The hope and goal is to improve the numbers already on WikiTree that need sources. Adding sources will help merges happen, too, which will improve our tree. Showing folks what sources you're using helps newer researchers see just what's available out there for us to access.

* The tally is of profiles improved, not sources added.

* If you attempt to add sources to a profile and just cannot find any, please add a note under a section like === Research Notes === giving where you tried to find records and you can sign it with the four tildes (~~~~) so the date is applied as well. Something like "Looked for John in the US Census records for 1900-1940 and couldn't find him on FamilySearch or Ancestry" would be fine. Or, "Searched google for an obituary and didn't find one." That way the next researcher knows where to start.

* If the only source on a profile is "Ancestry tree" or "Geni.com" it can count as unsourced, and you can add better sources to it to count in your tally.

Quite by accident, I seem to have fulfilled Dale's "hopes'n dreams" that each member find at least one Unsourced Profile. My contribution to the cause is Meader-111 (Harrie Lawrence Meader) who was flagged as unsourced when I happened to pop by his profile on the way to looking up my aunt who was his dad's second wife.

So, I've given the deceased bloke adequate citations to prove that he was on the face of the earth. (Thank you for making this task easy, familysearch.com) And I seem to have caught a wee bitta the bug.

Perhaps a few more unsourced profiles before the week is over? We will see.

I have a question -  I found that a number of unsourced profiles I checked, had profile managers who were currently very active on WikiTree. Do I go ahead and look for sources for these unsourced profiles, or do I leave them alone for the profile manager to add sources?

I speak only for myself, but I would say if you find and add a good source, not an Ancestry or other family tree file, then I would appreciate the help. Having said that, making even minor unsourced changes to the profile would push the profile to the bottom of the list for me because I work from the oldest edit date forward approaching the current date and I might miss looking for sources for that profile for a long long time.

I'd have to say yes. I know I am on that list of active contributors who has some profile in the Unsourced category. Some I put there myself, as I wasn't having any luck finding something or knew it needed a source but I didn't have time at that moment. Most are shared ancestors I have adopted from someone else's upload. As a Wiki, we welcome working together. Adding sources is definitely always encouraged :-)

Thanks for the feed back.  I know some people have gotten upset when people add to profiles they manage, and I didn't want to do anything that was going to upset anyone.

Another Question, I took on Unknown-233529, Anney Stovall and I was able to find alot of information on her husband and her with documentation from Federal Census', Bureau of Land Management records, and found their graves with photo's of their tombstones which had dates of birth and death.  I found her name was actually Anna L., and the Find A Grave record gives her maiden name as Rich.  I changed the profile to Anna L.  I was not able to change the Unknown to Rich - is there a way to do this?

Peter, thanks for the info.  The profile manager has updated the profile, and added the maiden name so Anna L. Rich Stovall is no longer an "Unknown maiden name".   So happy to find her maiden name as women can sometimes be difficult to trace.

I just wanted to bump this thread up and say that we're a little under halfway through the month, and have already sourced 893 profiles. Wow! If we keep going at this rate, we'll hit 2000 by the end of the month. Who wants to stretch for more than that?

For those of you interested in New England, now is a good time to work on Unsourced Massachusetts and Unsourced Connecticut. The New England Historic Genealogy Society has some of their databases on AmericanAncestors.org available for free this month, in honor of Family History Month. (Massachusetts Vital Records and the New England Historical and Genealogical Register are available right now, and The Great Migration Begins is coming up on the 18th.)

Answer 14

Getting a late start due to travel and working on adding family data to WikiTree.

I added sources to:

1.  Averett-129 - Hardy Averett. Federal Census data from 1850 and 1860, Perry Co., Alabama and 1870 Hale Co., Alabama.  Link to Jeduthan Averett Family Association which has data and documented sources on Hardy Averett, his children, and his parents.

2. Removed Unsourced label from Asher-341 - Eliza S. Asher as profile had existing sources.  Cleaned up bio and source sections from a previous merger.

3. Found sources for Bennett-7854 - Elizabeth Newton Formerly Bennett. Added source for marriage to Benjamin Franklin Newton.  Found Elizabeth's burial at Find A Grave with photo of her tombstone and date of her death, and corrected her date of death on her profile. Added link to her burial place photo at Find A Grave.

4. Found sources for Morgan-3074 - John Deskin Morgan.  Added heirs mentioned in his Will recorded in Wilcox Co., Ala. Added date and place of recording of Will.  Added place of residence from 1840 Federal Census, and names of children found in 1850 and 1860 Federal Census' of Wilcox Co., Ala.  

5. Corrected 1798 date of birth and place of birth for Mary Morgan (Morgan-3120) based on her age and place of birth in 1850 Federal Census, Wilcox Co., Ala.  Mary Morgan is listed as daughter of John Deskin Morgan (Morgan-3074), and Mary had 1798 listed as her possible year of birth which was 3 years before her father, John Deskin Morgan, was born.  Removed Ancestry family trees as source and added source from 1850 Federal Census which showed her possible year of birth and place of birth.

6. Located correct name for Anney and changed name to Anna, also located maiden name of Rich for (Unknown-233529), located place of burial and added dates of birth and death from tombstone at Find A Grave, added Federal Census records for 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 which gives correct name of Anna instead of Anney, and all census' give state of birth as Tennessee.

7. In locating information on Unknown-233529, wife of Ansell Stovall, I located extensive information on him, including correct spelling of his name Ancel and found middle name Manley.  Located his grave and his tombstone gave his dates of birth and death, added source at Find A Grave.  Located and added source for land record at Bureau of Land Management which gave his first and middle name as Ancel Manley Stovall.  Located denied claim for Civil War supplies sold to Confederacy and added source.  Added sources for 1840, 1850, 1860, and 1870 Federal Census' showing family.

8. Nancy Owens (Owens-164) found her married name, added source, with book and page number and courthouse location for her 1824 marriage; added 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 Federal Census data for Nancy.

9. John Bass (Bass-1583)  I added a biography based on the data I found and added sources for 1810 Federal Census Wayne Co., NC; 1816 Census Monroe Co., Alabama, Mississippi Territory, added source for year of death from suit heard by the Alabama Supreme Court over his estate, found in West Law, 1911 edition.

10. Julia Anne Holliman Bass Green (Holliman-22) she was not listed as unsourced but under the sources on her profile it gave the statement  No sources given, personal knowledge of and gave the name of the profile manager.  I added a biography based on data I found, and I added marriage source for her second marriage, census' for 1810, 1830, 1840, 1850, and 1860 Federal Census.  Updated her tentative year of death based on finding her in the 1860 census.

11. Jane Marsh Wilder (Marsh-3171) this was an unsourced profile that had nothing in the sources. Rather than mark it as unsourced I found Jane's death record in MA, Death Records, 1841-1915. I found her in 1850 and 1860 Federal Census' and in MA State Census in 1865.  Added exact dates of birth and death and place of birth and death which had been missing previously.
