Do you add documents to your profiles?

Hi

I have accumulated many, many documents for people within my tree and wanted to know if:

a. they should be added here; and

b. how they are added

I think it really depends on the type of documents. Can you elaborate on what you have?

Hi Marty.  Sure can....but...it would be a VERY long list.  Lol.  I have been researching my family tree for about 20 years and have almost 3GB of photos and documents.  These cover items originally from the UK, Australia and the USA.

They will include photos; BMD certificates from Australia and the UK; census records; copies of parish register records; wills (scanned copies of originals and transcriptions); newspaper and magazine articles; electoral rolls; shipping and immigration records; official biographies; personal letters and emails; scanned/photos of paintings and poetry written by my ancestors; adoption records (did someone say breakthrough!!!!!); university records; transcripts and original court cases; cemetery burial records; minutes from poor law records; manor records; vestry minutes; apprenticeship records; guild records; etc etc etc.

Some I have paid for directly; some I have collected free of charge; some have been obtained via one of the paid genealogy sites such as Ancestry, FMP etc; some have been given to me.

I hope that this helps.  It seems like a minefield with differing jurisdictions, laws and terms of service requirements.

Thank you so very much for posting this question. I found your question to the one I just ask. However, you gave more detailed information that you need. Which I found helpful.

I no longer do that due to the complicated copyright and terms of service rules. I do try to provide a link to them if they can be found online somewhere, an example of this is familysearch will send you to an image if one is available.

Thanks Dale!  I appreciate that input, too.  I'll give some thought to what I include here before adding any of the documents etc.

Hello, thank you for your message.  You can save them on your desktop then upload them from there.  Be sure to add the source.  If it came from you put something like Provided by Family.  Let me know if you need help.

You need to be aware of copyright restrictions on the documents. And the restrictions are different for every country.

Many sources have notes on there sites they can be copied as long as you source back to the place you got it from like on FamilySearch. In the Netherlands many things can be copied after 100 years/before 1915 without problems. I only add things with sourcing them and naming the maker(s)/owner(s).
