G2G: Play this week's Irish Connection Checkers game!

3.9k views

We're hoping to share in the luck of the Irish in this week's Irish-themed Connection Checkers game.

To play, first see which of these natives of the Emerald Isle is closest to you on our Big Tree

Second, attempt to verify your connection to one of them. In seven days (March 18), three players will be declared the winners and entered in the Connection Checkers Hall of Fame:

  1. The player who has the shortest verified path to one of the connections.
  2. The player who has the longest verified path to one of the connections.
  3. The player who verifies the most individual connection steps for themselves and by helping others. [current scores]

Please join us, even if you don't know where to begin. Start by simply posting an answer below saying which connection you'll try to verify. Then post updates as comments on your answer. If you get stuck, ask a question and others may be able to help. [more information]

P.S. Help us prepare for next week's Gene Hackman feature.

Dannon, do you mean me? Not sure I understand. And what needs to be fixed?

Okay, that makes sense. I think many people just think if WT provides a connection path, it's verified, and they just say it's all done here on the main post page for the week. But WT can probably find a connection between any two people about 75% of the time (not sure the number, just guessing, and for people of European descent, it's probably much higher.)  I think the point of the weekly challenge though is to double-check each other's work, mark relationships "confident" for overall accuracy on WT, add sources where they are missing (or in the case of FindAGrave, BillionGraves, Ancestry family trees, or Geneanet, ok to include but not an actual source by itself.)

I was just wondering if there was a way someone could fix the shortest verified path from the person with 12 steps to me because I submitted my steps into the contest (I had 9 steps) and I had a verified connection but they gave the shortest path to someone else.

Did you use the Challenge Tracker to record your points?

No, but I didn’t the last time I got the award. For reference I got an award for shortest verified path for Halloween monsters.

Based on the last two weeks, I think it's possible that the person in charge of the challenge has changed very recently. So what used fine may not work anymore.  The explanation of how to play says to use the Challege Tracker -- I would think it would be much easier for the person in charge to see who's done what if we all used it and could see everyone's progress on the scoreboard. It's probably mostly for who does the most overall, but, again, it's got to be easier for someone to verify winners if we all played the way it says to.  Unfortunately, the explanation of how to play isn't super obvious for newts.  I think someone should look at rewriting that piece of it as soon as all the new changes to the site are set in stone.

So does that mean my connection to LM Montgomery doesn’t count?

It probably still counts.  But as you can see by the start of this discussion, someone was wondering why relationships that someone says they verified aren't marked as "confident."  It kind of defeats the purpose of the game.

Of course, some of the relationships on your connection path will already be verified, but you should verify any that are not and add your source to the person's profile.  (Points only count for the ones you are able to mark "confident", not any that were already done.)  Then note what you did, save, and the challenge tracker will pop up.  Choose our challenge, click the pop up for the boilerplate language and fill in who you verified.  Save it, and a few minutes later, you'll see yourself on the weekly scoreboard with a(nother) point.

For shortest and longest paths, do the same process and then report your overall verification as an edit on your original answer of who you were going to work on for the week.

As for not winning, maybe since you didn't mark the relationships "confident", they weren't counted since no one could verify your work.

For those wondering I do the checking and posting of the winners. I can make mistakes and will likely will make more mistakes sometimes. I have fixed the shortest path winner on the comment above and on the winners hall of fame.

That was nice of you.  I'm sure he appreciated it.  As long as we have you here, is there anything we can do to make the process easier for you?

It has been a busy week, but I was finally able to verify all the connections on this 19 degree path from CS Lewis to me. I was skeptical at first that the marriage of his uncle to a Canadian was correct, but it was indeed.

Will try and verify my relationships with George Bernard Shaw and C.S. Lewis - I'm a big fan. Will, also,  try to verify my relationship to Mary Peirce-Evans. Sadly, I had never heard of her but am now intrigued. And, just because I'm crazy for Pierce Brosnan, will attempt to verify a connection, however distant.

Started off with C.S. Lewis. I discovered him in 4th grade when the school librarian suggested I read "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe." I've since read the Narnia Chronicles multiple times over the ages. As mentioned in the Forward, they were written for children ages 8 to 80. To find out we are 10th cousins is a real honor. Verified him through my direct relationship bringing it to 27°.

This week, I'm 17º from George Bernard Shaw.  My longest short connection is 31º to George Best.  My longest one using an MRCA is Shaw again at 38º.  I guess I'll start with him.

I've verified:

Anne Grosvenor at 18º

Hi!  This is my first time posting here.  It’s the first time I have had a connection that is not a surprise to me. It is Lady Mary Peirce-Evans and I have a 9 degree connection to her. She is my third cousin twice removed. I have grown up knowing a few stories about her and at one time I saw an aerial photograph that she was said to have taken of the family farm in Raheenagh, County Limerick.  I am not sure what else I am to do now.

My next two closest connections are: 15 degrees for C. S. Lewis and 16 degrees for George Bernard Shaw.

I am close to getting closer to CS Lewis but unlikely by the end of this topic but it looks like George Bernard Shaw is the actual closest to verify at this point.  I am sure that 14 in the lead now will  be eclipsed before the close of entries

Yes, I have several Irish ancestors on both sides of my family. While the percentage is different among the various genealogy sites I use, it's usually 20% or more.

This was a surprise since no one ever talked about Irish ancestry with our family oral histories.

Looks like I have my work cut out to verify the longest path between George Bernard Shaw and me: 53 between him and me with a common ancestor. Much closer if I accept in-laws and siblings as part of the path, but that direct path to a single shared ancestor is long! I may not be able to verify, but it will be fun to try.

First time trying this...I'll have a go at my 25 degree connection to W. B. Yeats, not particularly because it's long or short, but because he's one of my favourite poets.

My longest is George Best-3272 at 29 degrees

My shortest id Ann Sullivan-22038 at 18 degrees.

Both start relationship to me on my Stephens side of family with me and my father.

I am off to verify.

Never played before but I'll try this connection to C.S.Lewis

C. S. and Stephanie are fifth cousins twice removed

1. Clive is the son Florence Augusta (Hamilton) Lewis (1862-1908)
2. Florence is the daughter Mary (Warren) Hamilton (1826-1916)
3. Mary is the daughter John Borlase Warren Bt (1800-1863)
4. John is the son Mary (Bernard) Warren (1760-1825)
5. Mary is the daughter James Bernard (1729-1790)
6. James is the son Rose (Echlin) Bernard (abt.1695-)
This makes Rose the fourth great grandmother of Clive

1. Stephanie is the daughter of Warren Beamish
2. Warren is the son of Bernard Delacour Beamish (1907-1976)
3. Bernard is the son of Charles Bernard Beamish (1875-1950)
4. Charles is the son of Albert Beamish (abt.1840-abt.1920)
5. Albert is the son of Charles Beamish (1801-1867)
6. Charles is the son of William Beamish (1760-1828)
7. William is the son of Alice (Bernard) Beamish (-1792)
8. Alice is the daughter of Rose (Echlin) Bernard (abt.1695-)
This makes Rose the sixth great grandmother of Stephanie
