I would also love to know the answer to this. I am a decendant of Guillaume Trahan and his father Nicolas Trahan. I heard of this story but have not been able to get any info on it. Please keep me updated.
Also i have only been able to go back as far as Nicolas Trahan's mother but all it gives is Mrs. Trahan as her info. Would you have anything farther than that? Thank you...

I suspect that the word translated as books is actually livres the unit of currency .

the 'dict' Trahan probably means that the said

Trahan was fined 20 livres and 70 livres for  the estimated cost of  the young wood  [ ?? ] which he had pulled down and was found in his house and on top of this  (oultre)  40 livres in damages (domages) and interest.

I think that garde hammer is actually the name of a forest official(  a garde-marteau )

The marteau was the hammer used to mark the trees that were to be cut . The garde-marteau had the responsibility to determine which  trees should be cut. Moreover there was a particular edict forbidding the cutting of thickets less than 10 years old and regulations as to how much was left (I think this might be a  reference to coppicing ) http://geneal.busiau.com/metiers/#let-g
