G2G: Citation Builder

Hello all,
So Lately I have been working on going back and cleaning up My 1776 profiles. A lot of these have sources that come from Fold3.  I know there is an APP for Building Source Citations for Ancestry.com. so for the most part I save the document to Ansestry profile of that person and then Plug it into the Ansestry Source citation APP. Only it seems to me that this is the long and hard way to do this!

Is there an APP for Building  Source CItation from Fold3.

If not can we get one made?

I am also not sure what a Fold3 Citation should look like?
For right now this is what one of mine look like.

Joseph Primer, New York, Rank: Private<ref> Joseph Primer, New York, U.S. Muster Roll Card ((https://www.fold3.com/image/309396431/primmer-joseph-page-1-us-war-of-1812-service-record-index-1812-1815))  on Fold3.com,  (requires subscription). </ref>

There is not one specifically for Fold3, but if you use the WikiTree Sourcer App, it has a Citation Assistant that is pretty easy to use. It offers options, such as inline or source, and type of source like record or book that you choose. The rest of the fields will be copy/paste and include a convenient (for us especially) url. It has a preview window so you can be sure you are getting the result you are hoping for.

The Sourcer, as we users call it, also offers one click citation builder for the more popular cites like Ancestry, FamilySearch, and Internet Archive, to name a few. It is a browser extension, so it will sit up there in your taskbar whenever you need it. It will change your WikiLife.

It is also not really that hard to just manually create a source citation if you just remember the parts:

Author. Title. Publisher (including location, name, and year), Locator (page number(s)).

Optional, but certainly recommended:

  • accessed date
  • search criteria
  • link (if found online)

By the way, your link doesn't work. This is how I would do the citation (bear in mind I am no expert):

The National Archives. ''US, War of 1812 Service Record Index, 1812-1815'' : NARA Publication Number M602; Record Group 94; digital images, Fold3 (https://www.fold3.com/file/309396431 : accessed 13 March 2025). Reference card for Private Joseph Primmer aka Joseph Primer, Carr's Regiment, New York Militia (War of 1812).

Thank You Lucy,

I like the Citation formate you gave me so I have put that in the profile, and thanks for the link but I allready have it installed and did not see any links to fold 3, I will have to play around with it some more.  Thanks again, Jeff M

There isn't a link to Fold3 in the Sourcer. I usually open a second browser with the "Show Citation Assistant". That is how you get it to create a citation from any cite. For Fold3, it is almost as easy to just use the info in the left margin to create a citation. Some people consider Fold3 to be the author, but to me, they are presenting the source, the author is the originator, usually the National Archives. I just like to give both credit.
