Hi Jamie,

Regarding William Maddox 1641 Ireland-1714 New Kent, VA, are you citing someone's family tree? Or is there any real evidence of this?

If there is any real evidence, I and others who have researched the New Kent, VA Maddoxes until we're blue in our faces would really appreciate it if you could share it.

If it's just someone's family tree, then please be aware and mindful that there's a lot of misinformation floating around about the New Kent, VA Maddox family because people repeat each other's family trees as if they're based in evidence, resulting in confusion all over the place.

It would be so wonderful to find out that there is actual documentation t support what you're saying! But I don't want to get my hopes up. I will look forward to your response.

Thanks!

Daphne

Daphne, I  went back in to my research and found that there are web sites about the Maddox Family of Virginia.  But here is what I found and hope this helps.

1st source: U.S. and Canada Passenger and Immigration Lists Index 1500s -1900s. Name: William Maddox  Arrival year: 1665-1666. Arrival Place: Virginia. Source publication code 6212.30 Primary immigrant Maddox, William, date when grant was received for land in area cited, original certificates are on file at land office Richard ,Virginia. Other historical information also provided. Source Bibliography: Nottingham, Stratton Certificates and rights Accomack County, Virginia 1663-1709. Baltimore, Md. Clearfield County, Inc. 1997.91p. page 24.

2nd source. England Select Births and Christenings 1358-1975. William Maddox Baptism 20 Feb. 1641. Place: Kilmington Summerset, England. FHL Film Number 1279342  Household: Mary, Richard, William.

Ancestry.com Public Trees: Bailey-Gaines-Maddox-Webb, this has a picture of the Maddox Family Crest.

JK-Rousseau Family Tree, has information on Samuel Maddox's Will, found it very interesting.  also has this source listed; U.S. and International Marriage Records 1560-1900. Name: Samuel Maddox birth 1640. Gender: Male. Spouse Name: Anne Notley birth 1640. Marriage year 1669 number pages 1.

The Maddox Family of Virginia, web site; this has more information in a reply by Brian Maddox, dated Oct 1, 2007, reply to Samuel Maddox to a Bettye Pribyl on 07-06-07. from Gen Form. Genealogy.Com.

the web site; The Maddox Family of Virginia also has stories of the will, I think it was of Samuel Maddox.

I hope these sources help, I do not know enough about how to find all the sources but I try very hard to find them. I so want to do this right so that I may really help others with their family histories.

Hi Jamie. Yes, you do have several sources there. Thank you very much for sharing!

I'm not sure I'm seeing a story developing of how they're strung together, though.

  • 1641: a William Maddox is baptised in Kilmington, Somerset, England (s2)
  • 1665-1666: a William Maddox arrives from ? to Virginia (s1)
  • 1714: A William Maddox is buried in Wem Parish, Shropshire (s3b)
  • 1737: a William Maddox who is a miller has something happen in Widdenburey, Chester. (s3a)
  • 1591. someone named Edward has a father Thomas Maddox baptised in St. Stephen Parish, London. (s4a)
  • 1640: a Samuel Maddox is born, same year as Anne Notley (s5)
  • 1669: a Samuel Maddox marries an Anne Notley (s5))

Other notes

  • ancestry.com tree Bailey-Gaines-Maddox-Webb has a public crest on it
  • there is a family tree for Samuel who has a will and it's in JK-Rousseau Family Tree
  • * The Maddox Family website (I think you mean this) has plenty of other claims
The series of sources in the first set of bullets doesn't hold together as one or even two identities, but several, it seems. The Western half of the Isle of Britain, esp. near and in N.E. Wales and Cheshire, was swimming with Maddoxes in this time period, and same names and same dates don't really tie folks together. When the dates don't line up, you can be pretty sure you're dealing with different individuals.

I'm not exactly sure what else to say about the sources, as none of this actually has anything to do with John Maddox of St. Peter's, New Kent.

I've seen the Maddox Family website before. They're not publishing original research, they're publishing summaries of other people's research... some of which is in error w/respect to John Maddox of St. Peter's.... for starters that they say he lived in Goochland when he never set foot there (that was his son)... but also they're still tripped up over his wife's identity, as well.

John's been researched quite a bit by people with a lot of experience doing this kind of work, so unless you're quite the black belt with the research and willing to go to England to do some of it, there are people who have already trod this path before you... (yes, I do know two U.S.-based researchers who traveled to England to search through and inspect documents in hope of finding something on this guy....) He's a tough nut to crack!!!!

If your primary interest is in William Maddox or William Maddoxes, which one of the William Maddoxes from your sources is the one you're researching?
