Margaret Blackwood alias Elliot transported on Mary Ann from Edinburgh Scotland - help find parents

On 16 July, 1839 — Age: 22 my great great grandmother Margaret Blackwood alias Elliot (previous marriage) was transported for the crime of coining with her sisters. She and Mary were transported to Australia on the MARY ANN and I have her Australian convict documentation including indent, ticket of leave, permission to marry my gg grandfather Patrick Conlon alias Conway and her death. The other sister Jean (Jane) Blackwood was transported just before on the PLANTER and went to Tasmania.

What I cannot find is the family left behind in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland by these three sisters. I don't know if their parents were deceased and so the girls had gone to the city to survive by handing out forged money. But my brick wall is not being able to go back further on their ancestry....

Also Margaret stated on the papers that she had a child and later wrote to the Colonial Secretary of NSW to have the child reunited with her new husband my gg grandfather... I would love to find that record.

Thanks in advance  Lis

Thanks Maria, it could be Margaret, without knowing her parents names there is no way to be sure. Unless I guess the two sisters arrested with her also have the same parents - Mary 1821 and Jean 1819 they were transported also.

I found William and Mary on line thanks Are there census from then to see the families together?

Thanks Maxwell.... There isnt one set of parents for all three daughters matching the birth dates.... So maybe i was right .... That the teenage daughters took off from their parents (living in outer suburbs) .... And went to Edinburgh city to pass their forged money  and got caught while living in the city.

Is there free newspapers like Australia has so I can see if tgere were reports about the arrests... Maybe they mention the parents...

      Lis

I would try further afield using   http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

There are quite a few Ancestry.uk trees for your Margaret - some with images of her transportation and arrival etc in Australia.    None unfortunately has firm evidence of her parents names.    So others are having the same problem as you !!

Not familiar with newspaper sites here in Scotland (what an admission !!)  Will have a look and see what I can find.

Thanks Maria... Most on Ancestry are my direct Australian relatives and we have been updating and copying from each other as we go.... It os only now that I have decided to work on this tree exclusively for a while tgat I have tried to go backward to UK....

      Ah well
An update of sorts on this... I have been doing a course on Convicts here in Australia and have sent to National Records of Scotland for the trial and court records.. ( costing a fortune) but maybe there will be a bit more personal background... I did find Margaret has listed on her arrest papers in New astle NSW that she was from Forfarshire so maybe I was right yo think she want originallyy from the City of Edinburgh and the three girls had headed there to have better opportunities to survive.

Hi Lis,  I had a quick look on Scotlands People but can't see a birth or marriage record for Margaret Blackwood in Forfarshire (now Angus) in your timescale.   The only east coast marriage is

      27/04/1839 BLACKWOOD MARGARET WILLIAM TULLOCH/FR670 (FR670) F TILLICOULTRY /CLACKMANNAN 468/00 0030 0256

      Hi Maria,

So sorry to send you on a wild goose chase... No She was given permission as a convict to marry a freed convict (Patrick Conlon alias Conway)in 1841 in Dungog NSW Australia. But I cant find a marriage certificate.....

Before she was arrested and transported through the high judiciary court Edinburgh she was listed in the arrest record, as married to John Elliott (hence her alias Margaret Blackwood alias Elliott) in court 3/6/1839 and yet onboard the boat one month later was listed as a widow with one daughter... I cant find the marriage to John Elliott .... I am guessing around 1835/6 ....I cant find a baby girl Elliott to John and Margaret Elliott /  Blackwood between around there to the time of trial 1839..... Lis
