The Holocaust Project and The Collaborative Profile of the Week Present

Oscar Schindler

Oskar Schindler (1908 – 1974) a German credited with saving the lives of 1,200 Jews during the holocaust.

  1. Oskar Schindler deserves a great biography on Wikitree.
  2. Tell us about his life.
  3. How did he save all those people?
  4. Did he have children?
  5. Add photos if they are public domain. Check WikiMedia Commons.

When you start working on some aspect of this profile. Please provide an answer here. This keeps us from duplicating effort and keeps the question "fresh" in the G2G.

Holocaust Project

The Holocaust Project was formed to honor the memory of Victims of the Holocaust – those who are among the estimated six million people who were murdered by the Nazis during the period starting shortly before World War II and ending concurrently with the end of World War II.  In addition, those who escaped what would have been certain death by immigrating from their homes in the countries under Nazi control or hiding until the end of World War II are included in the project as Survivors.  The Holocaust project includes an additional category for Heroes – the people who risked their own lives to aid the escape of the Survivors or to provide their basic needs – food and shelter – while they hid.

Research to write profiles for Victims has unique challenges.  Records for Jewish people had not been maintained in Germany for many years before the Holocaust, so there are often no records, as opposed to records that exist but are difficult to find.  In the absence of the existence of records, WikiTree goals for primary sources often have to be relaxed and all too frequently you will see sources of testimony given by family members at war crimes tribunals as sources for birth, marriage, and death dates and places, as well as names of parents, siblings, spouses, and children.  Many of these same challenges also apply to Survivors.  It can be very difficult to trace their immigration paths, which often started with clandestine escapes.

Fortunately, the Holocaust project profile selected for this week’s collaboration is a Hero, so we anticipate that well sourced information about his life – and family – is out there to be found.  In addition, his story has been the subject of a recent movie, which should make the task an easy one.  How about it, WikiTreers – what can you find to add to Oskar Schindler’s profile?

Thank you

This is the story of Oskar Schindler and his family.  I don't know if you have seen it. Rachel

I found the marriage record for Oskar's parents and uploaded it. Gaile, if you want to format it better, be my guest.

Rachel, that postcard link is great. I love that story also at jewsihgen.
How interesting. Miss Emilie Tyrolt ( from the postcard info ) is either a godparent or a marriage witness from the actual records.
You are right, Gaile. We will definitely will find out what happened at the Kamp ! "The camp was liberated by the U.S. Army on 16 April 1945"

This link goes to Schon hengst Forum.  There are descendants of the Luser Line from the Netherlands.  They are giving information on the Luser family.  They also have a tree on Heritage.  You may be able to ask for admittance to the tree.  They may have some information.  Rachel

I have MY HERITAGE so I will check it tomorrow am. Good night, ladies.
Miss Tyrolt is Oskars Cousin who lived in Milwaukee.
Good Night.
This is a very good article.  In two articles now I have seen that Oskar had come to an understanding with his father and would see him any time he was in town.  Rachel

Maggie,  I found a different story about the death of Oskar's father.  This is an unbelievably detailed story of Oskar's life in a google book.
