Holocaust Project
The Holocaust Project was formed to honor the memory of Victims of the Holocaust – those who are among the estimated six million people who were murdered by the Nazis during the period starting shortly before World War II and ending concurrently with the end of World War II. In addition, those who escaped what would have been certain death by immigrating from their homes in the countries under Nazi control or hiding until the end of World War II are included in the project as Survivors. The Holocaust project includes an additional category for Heroes – the people who risked their own lives to aid the escape of the Survivors or to provide their basic needs – food and shelter – while they hid.
Research to write profiles for Victims has unique challenges. Records for Jewish people had not been maintained in Germany for many years before the Holocaust, so there are often no records, as opposed to records that exist but are difficult to find. In the absence of the existence of records, WikiTree goals for primary sources often have to be relaxed and all too frequently you will see sources of testimony given by family members at war crimes tribunals as sources for birth, marriage, and death dates and places, as well as names of parents, siblings, spouses, and children. Many of these same challenges also apply to Survivors. It can be very difficult to trace their immigration paths, which often started with clandestine escapes.
Fortunately, the Holocaust project profile selected for this week’s collaboration is a Hero, so we anticipate that well sourced information about his life – and family – is out there to be found.
