Who were parents of Johannes Lovejoy b. 1461 Little Marlow, Bucks. UK

We know that the Lovejoy Family had been living in the home town of Louey, Normandy, France before they came over as mercenaries with William of Normandy and Odo, Bishop of Bayeux to Little Marlow , Bucks, Eng. The trick is to find documentation concerning this as a good starting point.

Thank you for this answer.  I've tried locating Louey in Normandy, France without any luck.

The only Louey  in France that I've managed to find is located near Lourdes in south-western France.  

Checked this on the Internet and in my Michelin Atlas.  The latter is pretty detailed at 1 cm = 2 km.

Any help on Louey in Normandy, France would be gratefully received.

John (Johannes) Lovejoy, 1459 - 1573

John, (Johannes) Lovejoy was born in 1459, at birth place, to JOSEPH Lovejoy.

John married Margaret Lovejoy on month day 1487, at age 28 at marriage place.

They had 12 children: Thomas G Lovejoy, Elsabeth and 10 other children.

John passed away in 1573, at age 114 at death place.

 I found that Joseph Lovejoy (Johannes Father) was born in 1440 in London.However, I don't know who his parents were.

My Johannes Lovejoy was born in 1460 in Little Marlow, Bucks., England. He married Margaret Brinkhurst on 06/07/1487. Their first child, Thomas, was born in 1490.

According to my data, Johannes died in 1498 aged 38, and his eldest child, Thomas, died in 1573 aged 83. Do you think there may have been transposition of data between dates of death for father and son? Not impossible for someone to have lived to 114 at this time, but my gut feeling is that it's improbable.

Thank you for the information about Joseph Lovejoy b. 1440 in London. That was news for me.

Hi, Kenneth I agree that the death date seems suspicious. Unfortunately mistakes often happen, the original parish records are written in an ornate gothic script which is hard to decipher.

I did a bit more research and found this entry on "familysearch.org" under genealogy search.

Death 8 October 1566 at Little Marlow

Parents

Father Joseph Lovejoy

Mother Joanna Lyon

Spouse Margaret Brinkhurst

Marriage 6th July 1487 at Little Marlow

Again the year of death seems a little suspicious, but the rest of the information matches. They do have Margaret's death date and parents listed, but not Josephs.

Sorry to have been a bit slow in getting back to you.  Been having problems with one of our dogs!

Now this gets interesting.  According to my data, Johannes and Margaret had 4 children, 3 sons and 1 daughter, called Johane:

Thomas b. 1490; Robert b. 1492; Johane b. 1494; and Richard b. 1496.

This would fit in with Johannes dying in 1498. However, my date of death for Johannes is 6th July 1498, and he married Margaret Brinkhurst on 6th July 1487. Something seems a bit awry here, too with both events being on 6th July.  Possible, I suppose, but highly unlikely. What do you think?

Now regarding your date of death for Johannes - 8th October 1566 - this is the date of death that I've got for Johannes and Margaret's daughter, Johane who was born in 1494. Juxtaposition of first names and gender causing the error?

Have you got the date and place of death for Margaret Brinkhurst? Her father was Thomas Brinkhurst - dates unknown; Margaret's mother unknown.

Hope this might help! Incidentally, my connection with the Lovejoy family is through my paternal great grandmother, Martha Lovejoy 1861-1948. I was five years' old when Martha died and I've got no recollection of her.  Found out the Lovejoy connection when doing family history research about ten years' ago.  My family tree is on Genes Reunited. Perhaps you are a member, too?

Where do these dates come from? What sources are used as evidence?

There were no parish registers in 1460.  The earliest date for Little Marlow is 1559 https://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/BKM/LittleMarlow 

You will need to look elsewhere:; for wills, marriage contracts, deeds, court cases, manorial records, if wealthy, inquisitions post mortem.

Search the Bucks Archives . http://archives.buckscc.gov.uk/CalmView/advanced.aspx?src=CalmView.Catalog ( nothing there  from that early with Lovejoy spelling. )

If they are gentry look at the visitations of Bucks

There are some Lovejoy   records at the National Archives (with the 'normal' spelling; not tried others).https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?_q=lovejoy&_p=1500

 These place the family in Little Marlow in the 16th C. A William Lovejoy was an alehouse keeper.  Often court cases about land ownership or inheritance describe ancestry but they  are not digitised.Manorial records are usually not indexed beyond the name of the manor.
