Joseph Callahan, b 1781, d aft1850 Yancey Co., NC, was a son in law of John Chandler.  The second wife of Joseph Callahan was Elizabeth __________.  
I know one child of Joseph Callahan -  John.   Who were the other children?

His son, John, was born in SC.  Joseph was born in NC. ( census)

The parents of Joseph Callahan are unknown as well.

The Chandler wife of Joseph Callahan was not named Elizabeth.  Elizabeth, daughter of John Chandler, never married. Joseph did marry a daughter of John Chandler;; but, her given name is not known at this time.

A lot more work needs to be done.

In 1850, Yancey Co. NC was a Joseph Callahan aged 30 b. 1820 living with James E. Callahan aged 1 and Nancy Callahan aged 26.  I looked at that 1850 census you cited he was born in Yancey Co. in 1 781 and he is still there in 1850, I'd say he had an estate there.

There also was a large family of Callahans in the family of John aged 44 in Yancey Co. They most likely are related to your Joseph.  I found other Callahans  in Yancey Co. All those Callahans are going to be related someway to each other.  I don't see anything interesting on the web you may have to chase down Yancey Co. land records maybe from the Mormons.  But you have a lot of people to sort out.  This will not be an easy family.  David T. I did a cursory search on line for Yancey records - marriages, estates and deeds.-  I did not find them on line.  So, I will have go to LDS.

FYI, the father of Joseph Callahan is not not Joel Callahan,  Joseph is not in the estate file of Joel.
