William Tuttle, wife Elizabeth, and children, came to New England in 1635 and settled in New Haven. Like a lot of early wives, Elizabeth’s maiden name is unknown. Unfortunately someone, somewhere, without providing sources or evidence decided that she had a last name – Mathews, parents, Edward and Elizabeth (Nashe) Matthews, and a birth date and place - b. 30 Jan 1611/2 Exeter, Devonshire, England. I found it in “Ancestry of Seth LeMoyne Warner : the first eight generations, Supplement 1” which sites Families of Ancient New Haven as it’s source. Of course, Jacobus actually calls her just Elizabeth, as does everyone else from Savage to Anderson.
I’ve done extensive searching, on the internet, to find the original source for this and/or something that resembles a legitimate source or piece of evidence. Lots of internet genealogies contain Miss Matthews. Meyricks Heraldic Visitation of Wales Vol I p 183 lists a William Totyl, first of the line living in Devon who was married to Elsbeth Matthews. Of course he was alive in 1525, and there is no connection to the immigrant. Devon is about 200 miles from Ringstead, a long way to get a bride in 1620 ish.
I wish to change her back to Unknown, where she belongs. Comments? Discussion? Questions?
