I know John and Mary Scott had 4 children-Joann, Margritt, Samuel and Jasper.  I have proof of mother and children living in Pike County, Alabama on a census in 1850.  No husband or father is listed.  No record of any of them in 1860 in the same place or 1840-only a William Scott mentioned.   I'm assuming they moved from either Georgia or SC before 1850.  Do not have record of mother Mary's maiden name so am at a standstill.  My line runs through the daughter, JoAnn.

I find Armila Scott who died in AL. This son was born 1 Aug 1912 in Bullock Co. AL He died 17 Aug.1935 at the age of 23.  He was the son of John H. Scott and his wife Mary J. Pitts.  The thing to remember is that those were his parents.  they were not living in 1935.  They should have been living in 1912.  I don't know if that far apart disqualifies them for the John you seek.  Also this was a Black family.  I don't know if that makes any difference to you.

I also found the record of John Henry Scott and his wife Mary Jane Petts in the death record of Ben Scott who died 31 March 1950 in Troy, Pike, AL.  This Ben Scott was born in 1900 and was 50 years old when he died.  Here again your John Scott would have to be over 50 years old when Ben was born.  Not a compelling candidate.  .  "Alabama Deaths, 1908-1974," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JD5K-Y9K : accessed 26 November 2015), John H. Scott in entry for Armila Scott, 17 Aug 1935; citing reference cn 18403, Department of Health, Montgomery; FHL microfilm 1,908,533.

I did look at the 1850 census you cited.  Mary owns land in the census.  There might be land records.  Or if John died there might be intestate court documents or lord forbid a will.  Those would be in AL.  Which I don't have access to.  All of the children were born in AL so they could have lived in Pike Co.as early as 1838.  1837 is probably the marriage year.  Remember, the wedding would  have been in SC.  I went through both the SC marriage index and the AL index and did not see a John Scott that looked like a candidate.  I think your only option is to check land record if they survived the civil war.

Thank you so much!  I am looking for a white relative, but the latter examples should give me something to look into.
