Have not put them on tree yet, but the Averell family came from England in 1637 to Ipswich, Massachusetts. They do not appear in any church records other than only one granddaughter was baptized, but her mother was from a family that was active in the local church. There are quite a few town records. It was suggested they might be Quakers, but cannot find any records from that time and place and want to check it out.

What are the names of the grandaughter and her mother?
I looked it up again. The mother was Hannah Jackson who married a William Averell (multiple spellings). I had been looking at the daughter, but, all 10 of their living children except the eldest who was 35, were baptized into the Congregational church at Topsfield at the same time on 16 May 1697. This was 6 years after William's death. He was an accepted member of the community but not on any Congregational church lists that we found. This marriage of William to Hannah Jackson is the only place I can find an Averell in the Great Migration data.
I have an ancestor who was punished for tolerating Quakers.

The booklet source, is "The Descendants of James Skiff of London, England and Sandwich, Mass."  by Frederick Lockwood Pierson, A Descendant.

"In 1659, James Skiff, Town Deputy from Sandwich, was rejected by the General Court for his toleration of Quakers. "

Sandwich, MA is about 35 miles from Ipswich, MA.

Historically, according to Wikipedia, there were no Quakers in Massachusetts or anywhere in 1640. When they arrived a little later, they were not looked on kindly. The puritan idea of freedom of religion was freedom for my religion not anyone else's. They seem to have tolerated non-believers or non-church goers, but not dissenters from their own beliefs.

He was probably a non church goer then. It just seemed odd. This is my first venture into this area and time period. Thank you very much.

What an excellent link Frank.  I just spent and hour reading over some of the historical aspects of New England in excerpts from the book.  Thanks.
