Importing data from Ancestry

I have a lot of data in the WikiTree and that's the forum that I use for sharing with others. However, for research, I tend to use other other facilities - Ancestry being the obvious one - and this often results in the need to synchronize data between the 2 trees.

I realise that I can upload a GedCom of an Ancestry (or any other)  tree to WikiTree but what about individuals or a family, is there a way to upload the data on individuals rather than having to manually transcribe the data from one to the other?

Hi Simon.

GEDCOM is the only tool we have for transferring data. Inevitably, a lot will need to be need to be done manually.

If you have a standalone genealogy program on your computer, you can probably create a partial GEDCOM with that.  In the clunky old software I'm using (PAF from familysearch.org), the routine goes:

  1. Save the full file under a different name.
  2. Delete everyone but the people you want to upload.
  3. Export from the software's native file format to a GEDCOM.
  4. Upload the new GEDCOM.
