Elizabeth and the Ogre

Question

Sir Goddard Oxenbridge was called the Brede Giant and the Sussex Ogre and reputedly ate a child for supper every night, until the local children sawed him in half while he was drunk, it says here.

Could be one for the Black Sheep, though I'm not entirely sure the stories are true.

We show him with a wife Anne Fiennes (actually his 2nd wife) and a daughter Elizabeth.  Wikipedia agrees.

Wife Anne had ancestry, which we aren't showing yet.

Daughter Elizabeth married Sir Robert Tyrwhitt and they were ancestors of William Bladen, Attorney General of Maryland.

But other "usually reliable" sources make Elizabeth not the daughter but the grand-daughter of the Ogre, by his 1st wife, Elizabeth Etchingham, who also had Plantagenet and Magna Carta ancestry.

Propose to reparent.

The Sussex archaeological collections, Volume 8 published 1856, has some details on this family - Goddard is on page 219.  It seems to be citing some primary sources, including Inquistions post mortem.

It agrees that Sir Goddard Oxenbridge's first wife was Elizabeth Etchingham, daughter and co-heir of Sir Thomas Etchingaham, and their son Thomas was the father of Elizabeth Oxenbridge (later wife of Sir Robert Tirwhit) with his first wife, Elizabeth Puttenham.

Being an old fashioned kind of guy, I sometimes decry the names often given to children these days, with an amazing array of spelling but I have to admit it might make genealogy easier in the future. :)

So that's, uncle and nephew marry aunt and niece, and both couples have the same names.  A classic.
