Seeking information on the origins of Shampang surname

+5 votes
I have traced the name Shampang back to Emanuel Joseph Shampang, born in 1839 in La Chine, Montreal, Quebec, Canada but cannot find any information on his parents.

I'm assuming the Shampang surname spelling was different, possible Champagne, Champion, Shonepen. Emanuel Joseph's fathers name was possible Joseph Emanuel, but I have not found any solid evidence of this. Thank you for any help you can provide me with!

Consider also the possibility of descendants of Samuel Champlain, founder of Quebec in 1608

Marcel Trudel, “CHAMPLAIN, SAMUEL DE,” in Dictionary of Canadian Biography, vol. 1, University of Toronto/Université Laval, 2003–, accessed December 21, 2015, []

Correction Britni, Betty Shampang traced, researched and documented the Shampang Family for forty years, no one else. I would love some help. I am not healthy enough to travel to Montreal to find records for Joseph Shampang, SR and Marguerite Hoover. I would love to see some help there from the younger generation.
Champlain has no known descendants here
I am part of the Shampang family. I would be happy to help in any way i can

Sounds like a variation of Champagne to me...

Hi Britni,

Where does the date and place of birth come from?  I can find no boy born there with a name even remotely close when I search Lachine parish records (it's spelled as 1 word, not 2).

As far as name variations, that could as easily stem from Champion as from Champagne, although the sound is more similar to Champagne.  But I find no trace of a couple bearing the names you have entered in the area.

Emanuel J Shampang's birth date is from his Civil War pension file at the National Archives. His father was likely Joseph Champagne and his mother Marguerite Hubert in the Montreal records.
find no such couple.  Pension files, like funeral records, can be mistaken, unfortunately.  I find no such couple in any variation on searching through Drouin records.  Sorry.

Have you found his own marriage record and does it name parents?  Might want to concentrate on that first, may give you name variations also.  And might be under another name also, realize that Champagne was a ''dit'' name for a whole lot of people.
His marriage record is also in his Civil War Pension file. I have looked but am not sure if a public copy of the marriage certificate exists.
can you make out the date and place?  If you give me that, may be able to find it.  Marriages are more accessible than baptisms and funerals past a certain date.
