Mary Ann GRACE was born Q1 1840 at Bicester, Oxfordshire.

She married Alfred JOINER, Q4 1861 at Watford, Hertfordshire.

The couple were childless while living in Watford at the 1871.

By 1881 Alfred was living (aged 40) at 3 Cambridge Terrace, Franklin Road, Watford with his wife listed as Elizabeth (aged 22) and sons Charles and Sidney aged 3 and 1. Elizabeth was born BUTTERFIELD on 18 Dec 1859 at Great Gaddesden, Hertfordshire.

I have been unable to to find a death in the GRO indexes for Mary Ann JOINER, or a marriage between Alfred JOINER and Elizabeth BUTTERFIELD before the birth of their eldest son Charles.

Could she be the Mary Joiner who died in Q3 1877 in Amersham, aged 46?

In the 1871 Census, a Samuel Wright is lodging with the couple.

In 1881, the same Samuel Wright can be found living 36 Stanmore Street, Islington. His alleged wife is Mary Ann!

Thank you for responding.

I am afraid this does not feel quite right although I will bear it in mind.

I have found a Mary Ann JOYNER died Q1 1873, Strand LND which is beginning to look a distinct possibility.
Thank you for that.

I have had time to do the necessary checking. I can find no trace of a marriage between either Alfred Joiner and Elizabeth Butterfield or between Samuel Wright and Mary Ann Grace/Joiner.

It rather looks as though Mary Ann ran off with the lodger and Alfred found himself another woman to take the role of wife and bear his children. It sounds like quite a modern story.

Thanks again for helping to sort out a long term mystery.
Yes, my thoughts also Paul!

I am afraid that this Mary Ann JOYNER is listed as an infant.

Thank you for responding.

The area is right but I do rather feel that the death is a little late and Mary a little older than she would have been.

I will keep it in mind.
