Who was Henry de la Rieux(1502-1570)?

LDS has Henry de la Rieux as firstborn ? of Francis I - King of France.
No other reliable source can verify this.
I asume he got his surname from his mother?
Some sources state that he is married to Catherine de Medici,
but so is his halfbrother Henri Valois.
He seems to have two brothers Louis(1523) and Felix(1521).
The surname spelling changes quite a lot i.e. LaRue/Le Roux/de la Rieux,etc.
His son Bertole/Bertolet (1525-1590) is the disputed ancester of
all the Le Roux families in South Africa.
Do you know who this mysterious fiance of King Francis was?

The book I have on the Valois dynasty of France, only mentions 2 illegitimate sons of Francois I; Nicolas d'Estouteville and Louis de Saint-Gelais.  There is no mention of Henri de la Rieux, and in any case, Francois I was born in 1494 and can't have fathered a child born in 1502.

The only Henri de Rieux, I can find so far was Comte d'Harcourt from 1532 - 1557, although he would also have been born later than 1502 and he had no direct connection to the Valois dynasty.

I 'm thinking that Henri de la Rieux may be totally imaginary.

Clearly, this profile needs work and I am so glad you noticed it. Can you help us edit it correctly by posting sources for the changes on it's bulletin board? It would be greatly appreciated and thanks for helping our collaborative genealogy site !

I'm trying to clean up the Valois line around 1500 and worried about the presence of this "de la Rieux". For now I have removed "Dau de la Rieux" as a wife of François I. Even if she existed, they were not married.

I'd like to add at least the Uncertain Family template to Henri. Are there any objections?

It's not possible to remove François as father for now, as the profile is PPP.

I notice that another project is the manager for this profile, so I think I would post a comment about what you plan to do, and see if there are any objections.

I also notice that a book is mentioned in the biography and I wonder if it is available online and what the mention of Mademoiselle de la Rieux, actually says.

Done!

As for the book, it is available though Hathi Trust here. The relevant passage is page 139. It is part of a list of short poems that Brantôme or Marot wrote for or about ladies at court - described p. 136 as "ladies of lesser condition" (than princesses or great mistresses) "some were their rivals, but their rivals for one day". The paragraph about "Mlle de Rieux", as I understand it, is an advice to enjoy life before age robs her of her (attractive) plumpness. Not much to go on and hardly enough to conclude she had a child with the king.

Moreover the profile says born ca. 1502 - François was born 1494!  suppose Henri was born later, it still can't be much later than 1510 - his son bas born around 1530. At any rate, he was born before François became King, which makes the ladies at François's court less relevant.

There are so many Leroux/Le Roux in France. Many people could have been the ancestor of South African Le Roux families.

Hi Isabelle,

Thanks for working on this, looks like they really could use some attention and sources. I added the info you posted (source + link) to the profile now, and don't know about others, but I'm ok with and have no problem with the unverified parents template. We could also remove them as parents, but the problem sometimes is (or perhaps was ?) people are going to re-attache them or when that's not possible create new duplicates for these profiles.

So for some the unverified parents template with a clear explanation is a better option, not sure what's best here though, it might be as John says an  imaginary person, to fill a gap and be able to connect a lineage to some Royals..so we could add something about it to the Unverified template to make sure this is clear and not repeated again ?
Hi Isabelle,

I added the Uncertain Family template + a note and links to Henry now.
