Surname List - How to Build a Good One

Building a good list of surnames is helpful in conducting genealogical research and an absolute essential for DNA matching.  WikiTree provides the ultimate tool for building a rich list of surnames.  Click on the [My WikiTree] tab.  Next click on [Family List].  A list of all known ancestors is displayed.  More than likely this will display many previously unknown ancestors.  The default displays 10 generations.  If you want a rich list, reset the number of generation to 15 and then click (Go).  Copy the complete into the clipboard and paste into a word process, OneNote, or EverNote.   A word processor is preferred because it will allow you to enlarge the font size.

Once you have saved the list, use another preferably OneNote or EverNote page.  Another word processing file can be used.   Bounce back and forth between the two files copying the last name of at birth into the clipboard and pasting it into a second file.  Once finished you have a rich surname list.

I took my list and divided it into two groups. Primary surnames were the first eight generations. The secondary list contained the last seven generations. When combined with a list of locations where your ancestors lived, this becomes a powerful tool in building a quality DNA query email.

Thanks for that Hugh - I've just gone and had a play! Like that very much. as I'm a list type of person.

I have tried to record stuff on Evernote before, but got a bit side tracked with the plane spotting reports I found I'd put there too.

No time like the present for another go. :)
I use the surname tree widget ("Surname" in the dropdown menu under your WikiTree ID in the minimenu at upper right of your profile page - the one under My WikiTree is different). Don't know if you can see mine, but you can put your WikiTree ID in for Noland-165:

oops - never mind. Not even 8 generations of surnames. And I'd never upped the number of generations on the Family List before. Pretty neat. Thanks Hugh!
Holy cats! That Family List is one powerful toy! I now have an alphabetized list, with locations and dates, to print out & take with me as a hardcopy reference on genealogical road trips. Surname widget isn't even in the same galaxy, let alone ballpark!
This is truly amazing, 15 generations wow. I have a question though. You said it would display previously unknown ancestors (which it did), what I don't understand is how does it come up with so many previously unknown ancestors? Where did all of these unknown ancestors come from?

I'm sorry if this sounds like a silly question; I don't understand how it happens.
I have never traced back on paper 15 generations.  I was as wowed as everybody.  It sure comes in handy for DNA matchjing.
Loretta - That's one of the really cool things about working on a global tree. I still find news-to-me ancestors every now and then when I check my relationship with someone (see http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Special:Relationship and http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Special:Connection). The new ancestors are from other folks' trees that have been connected to the WikiTree.

Cheers, Liz
