Was his wife named Mabel? If so his race in 1940 was listed as white. This Herbert was born 1906 and lived in Clarke County, MS.

There is a Herbert Harper Junior who was born 1935 or so also.

Do you know anything else other than his name?

Why don't you start putting up a profile for your family so they can help you do his heritage with research ?

If your mother's father was an Indian, both your mother and you should have some native American DNA (and she would have more). Order autosomal DNA tests to find out.

This is a way more common story than most people are aware.  The question always is, can you document it?  I have not been able to document the Indian ancestry my grandfather believed he had.
