merging am I doing the right thing

+6 votes

this is my great grandmother !

I tried to enter her father but a profile for him already exists, this made me realise Ellen also exists on wikitree under another profile

I've tried to merge but not sure if done it the right way - frustration is I can't continue with my ancestors until the merge is complete - I have a bare branch!

Any suggestions on what to do next?

Thank you?!?

I am not an expert, but while you are waiting you could be working on getting all your source documents together such as sources for birth, marriage, death.

This way when they clear the way for the merge you will be all set to go.  The same thing sort of happen with my grandfather.  Someone else had his profile so the other profile manager gave his profile to me and I became the profile manager.

I would focus on collecting your source documents.

Hope this helps you a little bit.

It looks as though you have the merge going right.

I would also ask the manager of your great grandfather's profile and any other profiles that are not "White/open" privacy level to put you on the trusted list. Then you can work on those profiles, while you wait for the merge.

still no response to requests to be added to the trusted lists and no response re the merge of profiles - so frustrating - leaving part of my direct ancestors blank on my wiki tree :-(
Let me point you to Unresponsive Manager Form

You get there by going to the profile in this case Ellen Naylor. Click on the "Family Tree and Tools" tab. Go all the way to the bottom to "Unresponsive Profile Manager Request Form".

There are some steps you have to take to get the unresponsive manager removed, but you've already done at least one of the steps.

this is the unresponsive profile in question!

stll not had my merge request accepted - what happens next!?!
by I Plimmer G2G1 (1.9k points)
When a merge is proposed (which is the most you can do to start with) the profile managers of both profiles are notified and asked to decide whether or not to approve the merge.  If both profile managers approve it then the merge happens immediately (upon entry of the second approval).  If one rejects it then the merge proposal is changed to a "rejected merge" and noted on both profiles to prevent someone else proposing the same merge in the future.

If the manager of at least one profile does not take any action for 30 days then (if the profiles are public/green or open/white privacy) the merge proposal will automatically receive "default approval".  After that, any WikiTree member can act on it by either completing or rejecting the merge.

Please remember that when you check the box to complete a merge, you're not yet done - you are now responsible to combine the biographies and sources from both original profiles into one single coherent narrative.

Thank you so much for doing this work.  Merging duplicates is probably the thing that is most in need of attention here!
thanks! requested access to the other ancestors connected to my ancestor (from the merge request) but still had no feed back on any - still early days but hopeful - have been able to edit some further back in the tree and have been able to add to them also - it's just the merging of the more recent ancestor which is frustrating! ;-))
