I am in Germany and trying to locate the village my ancestors came from

As I've tried to locate my historic European (mostly German) ancestors, the shifting of political boundaries and the substitution of one place name for another (sometimes combining villages as the populations increased) become stumbling blocks. There's much one can do from a computer before travel, such as consult with the state archives and various maps. When you google towns use the umlauts of the original town names and contemporary town names, not the anglicized spellings that seem easy but are themselves absolute barriers to finding facts.

    And btw, go to a library. Well educated Germans are librarians and speak English. You will ask for a research librarian only. They, along with archivists, are your most valuable research tools.

Thank you for your input. I did, in fact, Google maps the location and it emmediately dropped a pin on a location, but didn't tag it with the name I'd put in. Instead it labeled it with a person's name - as if it were a private residence? There is nothing else around it and would appear that it might still be a farm. Next time I'm in Germany I hope to be able to follow the map to that location and see what's there.

I had already gotten a pin on Google maps for the location, but it only gives a name of a person - perhaps the individual living there now? I had hoped for a street view, but it must be too remote.

In satellite view you can see that it is a small farm village. The Vogt Pin is in House address #29, across the street from #27, which is next to the place with all the solar panels.

Wow! That map, Barbara, is really amazing! It's certainly easy to think that the light grey area is what is owned by the resident, Margarete Vogt. It would be interesting to try to correspond with her in the interim between your trips. How would one do that?

Seriously, switch to satellite view. The light grey area is the entire village, most of which is open yard. There are about 3 dozen buildings in 3 distinct groupings, some residential, others clearly farm buildings. The address for the Vogt residence is: Reupoldsrot 29, 74575 Schrozberg

Mike, hi and thanks. During the week that didn't "make sense" to me, but today when I went to the link, I found after a couple of furtive cliks the square suggesting "satellite." I wonder if I'll be able to apply these directions now to my own tree's villages on the outside of Karlsruhe. I'm grateful for your guidance and persistence in this search for villages.

Denada, and yes, it should work there  too.

The quality of the images declines dramatically in the former Eastern Bloc (for predictable reasons), but so far my experiences with the former W Germany is of good high resolution. Still no street view in the towns and villages though, at least not the ones I have been looking at.

As far as a street view goes; apparently Germany has restrictions on that for privacy. Not a bad idea and for my purposes the overhead is better than nothing.

Curious, because I have most def used street view in major urban centres (eg try Hamburg) for both residential and commercial areas, so I assumed that it was more of a work in progress.

Now that I’m living in Germany I’m learning more and hope to actually go this weekend to the farm in Rupoldsrot where my great grandmother was born. One thing I’ve learned here is that it’s not legal to have street views of places here - invasion of privacy, I assume.
