Are we still using these tags?

Hi Guys & Gals,

As I have been reading postings from a year or two ago I notice these tags: announcements, images, photos, improvements.  First are these tags still active? Second are these tags that individuals somewhat new to wikitree should follow?

What tags should newbies follow to help them learn the roaps here?  I have alot of problems imbedding images where I want them to go.  So I need to learn a great deal more about images and photos etc.

Taylor, Glad you are thinking about tags.  They are great for two reasons: you are notified of questions and activities in your areas of interests; and you can see who else is also interested in the same thing.  This gives you a pool of people you can ask directly.

If you click on the Tags tab at the top of the G2G screen, you will see a list of tags used.  As you can only follow 20, you need to choose carefully.  "Improvements" is the most used tag, and it is certainly one to follow if you want to keep up with what is going on at WikiTree or have an input into future developments. If you are involved in a project, be sure to add that tag to your list.

Other great tags to watch are "Mentor Tips" and "How_to_Wikitree", because, even if you aren't a Mentor or a newbie, you can learn from the experience of others. (Why reinvent the wheel?) Tags for surnames are good, but beware of common ones like Smith, Jones, etc, or you will be innundated.

To get the best bang for your buck, choose tags that are used more often: "Photos" and "Images" are tags that are used a lot, but "Photographs" is used rarely.

Regarding "bang for the buck," note that some tags are treated as synonyms, so you don't need to follow tags that have similar meaning. For example, if you select the "new_netherland" tag, you'll also see items tagged for "nns," and if you select "pre-1700," you'll also see items tagged "pre-1500."

Use the URL http://www.wikitree.com/g2g/tag/ to see all items with a particular tag. For example, http://www.wikitree.com/g2g/tag/announcements shows all items tagged for "announcements."
Thanks! I didn't realize that some tags are treated like synonyms. Very helpful.
Ellen, I'm not sure in what context you mean regarding the synonyms. We are redirecting the "[Tag] Genealogists" pages to projects that use synonymous tags, but you have to follow the right tag to see content in your daily updates.

Regarding the tag "improvements", Vic, I actually don't use that one or follow it. Maybe I should because people use it for suggested improvements, but I don't have the bandwidth. I just check in the WikiTree Tech category once in a while.

When there is a new development I tag it with "announcements".
I had this vision that my feed would get all clogged up with messages about people subscribing to Announcements, which I really didn't need to know.  But I needn't have worried, because very few people do.
Thanks for correcting my error, Chris. I have been seeing G2G questions in my feed that didn't seem to be tagged for any tag that I was following, so I inferred that "the system" was showing me items with closely related tags. Must have been a figment of my over-active imagination!
Vic,

Thank you very much for your response, appreciate your advice.

Taylor
Ellen,

Thanks for the links I appreciate it.  When you look through the old postings you notice all these tags.

Thanks again

Taylor
