John Dawson is believed to have been born in Westmoreland, England and immigrated to Charleston, SC around 1755. To date, I can find no one who has discovered the identity of his parents, but I have some clues that I am willing to share!  I have been unable to discover much if any information on his son, Charles Postell Dawson, or his grandson, Thomas Osborn Dawson, my 2Great Grandfather and Great Grandfather.

According to the DAR record, he married Joann Broughton Monck, daughter of Colonel Thomas Monck.

I understan the dates for this John Dawson are slightly "out" My information, verified in many places is that he was born in Raygill, Garsdale West Riding of Yorkshire in 1734 and died in 1820. He was a great mathematician, although he did not seek fame. He was also a surgeon who funded his own study by shepherding, and later on machine knitting. A self made man. He was in contact with the notable Sedgwick family. I think he was my hero because he did it all himself. There are two portraits in the National Portrait Gallery. I am not a member but hope this information helps other "Dawson seekers"
