Suggestions for February's Connection Combat?

+15 votes

Hi Connectors and others interested,

Do you have a good suggestion for a pairing for the February Connection Combat

If so, share it here!

It could be love related since Valentine's Day is coming.  Or something else to consider is February is Black History Month.

Remember, the winner of the combat will be featured in our special Connection Finder

February also marks the start of the 2016 Presidential election season. This year Donald Trump and Bernie Sander have created about as much excitement as politicians can.  Wonder which of them has to most connections to the global family tree.  Maybe  a battle among the 2016 presidential candidates, if not this month at some point.  I understand if the mere mention of politics puts you to sleep :)  But I think it would be interesting.

Richard Pryor and Chris Rock

Richard because he allegedly has some sort of connection to the Van Alstynes

And Chris Rock because he is hosting the upcoming Oscars.

Both have a good start if Chris' mother is connected to him.

For Black History, as distinct from current celebrities who are black, how about including W. E. B. DuBois? He ought to  be connectable, based on what Wikipedia says about his ancestors.

Another candidate is Alex Haley, whose claim to fame includes his work to document his own family history.

I also think we should connect ALEX HALEY. He was my inspiration for getting into Genealogy when Roots was aired in 1979.
Alex Haley also got me interested in tracing my roots, long before I knew it was called genealogy.

Henry Louis Gates Jr. still isn't connected to the tree, so it might be fun to have a genealogy themed competition against Alex Haley even though Haley's  research is controversial.

How about we match up Alex Haley with Henry Gates? Two giants in the genealogy world who are both black! What a wonderful way to show BLACK LIVES MATTER!
I am reading the article about the controversies in Alex Haley's genealogy. I think our purpose would be to connect him to the Global Family Tree with proveable sources and documentation, not just to take his story as given. I am also wondering what DNA has shown for Alex Haley's ancestry.

I was just going to suggest Henry Louis Gates, Jr!  You beat me to him, Erin! :-)

Another thought I had was Frederick Douglass, if he hasn't already been connected, or his wife Anna Murray-Douglass.

Henry Louis Gates Jr. was a target in the October Connection Combat, but no one managed to find a connection:
Well, that's ironic, isn't it?!
All may not be lost. There are a bunch of people connected to Henry Louis Gates who apparently haven't been researched yet (people for whom genealogy probably could be found).
