how can i find the family in an old photo album tin type i just purchased

I think that it won't be easy. You can post it here on G2G and see if anyone can help. Often clothing style can give a date. Any clues on location?

I agree with Brett that it will be very hard. I have several photo albums that I inherited from ancestors but I can't identify anyone in the photos.

Time period can be roughly determined by type of photographic technique: daguerrotype, ambrotype, tintype, albumen print, etc

Frequently the name of the photographic studio can be found on the photos and you can try to google them up to find geographic location and type period.

Geographic location and time period can also sometimes be estimated based on visual clues in the photos.

However, pretty near impossible to identify the actual people in the photos.
