Importing a GEDCOM file into WikiTree

+7 votes
Hi Eowyn

I have the beginnings of a profile in WikiTree and am very much a beginner. The existing data is from my mother's side with the names Todd and Killen.

I have a more extensive pedigree on both maternal and paternal sides in another program (PAF/LDS) and would like to import the GEDCOM file from there into WikiTree. If I do that can I just overwrite my existing small amount of data in WikiTree? That would be my preferred option.

On my father's side the family names will be Smith, Purvis, and Reid.

Many thanks

You can't do exactly what you want. But you can make it work.

When you first import your GEDCOM file Wikitree will present you with a list of possible matches to each person. You will check if they are a match or not. If they are a match they will not be imported. If they are not a match they will be imported. But once imported any profiles that are imported that are not attached to the larger tree because they were say married to a person in a profile that is already on Wikitree will be "floating." That's true for spouses and children for example. You will need to go back and find these profiles and attach them manually.

The other option is to import duplicates and then manually merge them after import. This is discouraged for all but a very few profiles. But this is another work around.

There is no way to import and merge automatically in one step.

I hope that makes sense.

It is always recommended to start with a very small import and see how that works before trying a bigger import. So you may want to cut off a small piece of just a generation or two as a test run first.
