Does anyone have a source for this? I think this is incorrect. Should her maiden name be changed to unknown?

Mary Hilton 1632 - 1695 married John Scribner / Scrivner 1623 - 1675?

Checking Anderson and several other sources there doesn't seem to have ever been a daughter named Mary Hilton at all much less a marriage to John Scribner / Scrivner.

I have not seen this first source but the family association lists it and they just list her as Mary MNU:

Charles N. Sinnett The History of the Scribner Families in America Fertile, Minnesota, 1914 Repository Maine State Library, Augusta, Maine. p 20 - 22

The Great Migration Directory, Immigrants to New England, 1620-1640” 2015 points to “The Great Migration Begins, Immigrants to New England, 1620-1633” 1996 (for Edward Hilton. It only lists the 4 sons and 2 daughters Susanna and Sobriety. This then points to Noyes, Libby and Davis where the same children are listed. Its second reference is Mary Lovering Holman’s “Pillsbury Ancestry” 1938; it lists the same 6 children for Edward Hilton).

G. W. Chamberlain The Descendants of Charles Glidden of Portsmouth and Exeter, New Hampshire Boston: 1925 p 77 (has both names, but typically referring to land boundaries. There is nothing about wives or children – no genealogies for these two men. I would delete this source).

Frank R. Holmes Title: Directory of the Ancestral Heads of New England Families 1620-1720 Publication: Name: Genealogical Publ. Co., Inc. (does not list any wives or children).

Child's Genealogy of Henniker, New Hampshire

Ruth Lawrence, 1933, New York Title: Colonial Families of America

I checked Noyes Libby and Davis and they don't even have a daughter Mary. They do say under Edward Hilton: "Sobriety, m. 20 Nov. 1651 Henry Moulton. (Savage mistook her name for Mary.)"

“History of the Town of Andover New Hampshire 1751-1906” 1910by John R Eastman has genealogies for both Scribner and Hilton. The genealogy for John Scribner has the wife Mary with no surname. The genealogy for Edward Hilton shows a seventh child, Mary, but has her married to Joseph Hall of Exeter.

Hat tip to Jim McAndrew (McAndrew-102) for finding a link on Ancestry.com to:

George Norbury Mackenzie, Colonial Families of the United States of America, (1914) Volume IV: Scribner Family p 448

"It is claimed that his wife was Mary Hilton, dau. of Edward Hilton, one of the historic founders of New Hampshire, 1623, and that he came from Kent, England."

That's not a very strong source...
Wouldn't you agree in this case to cite both sources and discuss the conflicting information about the spouse and state that the more recent source is stronger?

I added a "disputed wife" section to John Scribner citing this source and then mentioning that Robert Charles Anderson and more recent sources show no daughter named Mary Hilton. And I added both sources to the old profile for "Mary (Hilton) Scribner." She is currently disconnected as a spouse of John Scribner and replaced my Mary (MNU).

Sounds good, Roland. Thanks.
Thanks Jillaine!
The administrator Merry (http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Kennedy-2792) of Mary Hilton (http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hilton-399) has declined to change her maiden name to unknown and merge her into (http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Unknown-308584)

I have asked her to explain her reasons on this thread on G2G so we may discuss them.
Thanks!

(FYI, she doesn't need to change the maiden name before merging. The merge will do that.)
The merge has been proposed and denied. Merry is refusing to merge because the maiden name is not the same citing "too many differences." Merry feels the profiles are too different because of the name difference. Catch 22 :)
