Hi from a newbie looking at ancestry in Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire and Leicestershire. Surnames I'm currently looking at include Humphrey, Smith, Wilkins and Hancock. Specific village/town locations cropping up regularly include Banbury, Chacombe, Duns Tew and Nanpantan/Loughborough. I've joined the Great Britain Project>England sub-project as all of my ancestry is in England so far. I just thought I'd take the opportunity to say hello as i'm trying out and getting to know the various parts of the site :)

Regards,

Gillian

Welcome to the great community of Wikitree.
Thanks :)
Welcome aboard!
thank you :)
Hi Gillian! If you need any help with your Loughborough ancestors in Leicestershire let me know! If you look at the A6 road from Loughboro back into Leicester you will find places where some may have moved to! I have one's who moved from Belgrave to Loughboro and vice versa!

Iain..
Yes, I found them in various villages in the area: Barrow on soar, Shepshed, Hathern, East Leake etc. One was in Leicester after having apprenticed in Whitwick. Thanks for the offer of help in the event I might need it :)

Hello, Gillian, and welcome to WikiTree.  Take your time to look around the site - there are a lot of activities here.  This G2G site is a wonderful place to ask any questions you may have, and to share your knowledge of England with those of us who know less about sources in that area.

I'll be sure to share anything I come across that I think will be useful :)

Hi Gillian, welcome!

Which Wilkins's are you interested in in Leicestershire? I've got a few in that neck of woods!

Hi Alison, my Wilkins's are all in Northamptonshire, my Platts, Smith, Morrell and Humphrey family members were/are in Leics.
I've got some Smith's there too (who married Wilkins's) but i guess most people will have.
Yes, I've been dragging my heels on the Smith side for that reason - thinking of assessing all the possible matches fills me with dread, lol . Also, one of my relatives is/was a John Smith who we have not heard from since the 60's and we haven't a clue where to start with finding him. My mother believes he's dead now and that he may have gone to Australia under a different name.
Hello Gillian,

When you are ready to tackle your Smith line, here is a list of other Smith Researchers:

www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Smith_Researchers

Of the names on this list, I recognise Kitty (Cooper) Smith's. She posts here on G2G & is quite knowledgeable. If memory serves me correctly, she has been involved in a project to focus on the Smith name and has had some sucess using DNA results to sort the various lines into branches based on haplogroups.  Perhaps reaching out to her would be a hoid way to get started with that project.

Ciao,

Michele
Hi Gillian,

Welcome, most of my ancestors are in England too, but not those counties. I thought the same about Smiths I had one married to a Brown in Norfolk and didn't think I would ever find him, but got the marriage cert. on the first search, so keep searching.

Hi Gillian,

I am Matthew Hancock, and I live in Staffordshire. I have traced Hancocks back to 1790s, many of them in Northamptonshire and Cheshire. If I can help, please get in touch
