Category Names for Discussion: Brick Walls

+20 votes

A Categorization Project member brought up the inconsistency in category names for brick walls, see Category: Family Brickwall.

Currently, there are categories named Brickwall, Brickwalls, Brick wall and Brick Walls.

Categories about the same thing need to be using the same name, so what should these categories be called, considering:

  1. The General Rules for Category Names say category names should use the plural form if the category is about a set of profiles.
  2. Brickwall isn't a word.
  3. After much to-ing and fro-ing it was decided the categories for profiles without sources use the name of the country or state as in Australia Unsourced Profiles rather than Australian Unsourced Profiles.

Minor correction,  I believe you mean "country" not "county" unless you're just implying that this implies any location category.
Thanks Dave, I did mean country so I corrected it, but it does apply to any location really.

I vote for Category: Australia Brick Walls!

Thanks Leigh and all who voted on this.

As there's been no other suggestions we'll go with Category: Location Family Brick Walls.

I've created the top level Category:  Family Brick Walls and some of the Location subcategories underneath it, such as Category:  United States Family Brick Walls.  It would be wonderful if people could assist with moving profiles into these categories.

Oh. Dang. I see I missed the boat. Is it too late to reconsider and leave "Family" out of Brick Wall location categories? As you said & Leigh agreed to - Australia Brick Walls (not Australia Family Brick Walls), with top-level being Category:Brick Walls (which can be sub-cat to Family Brick Walls and vice versa).

I think that including “Family” in category names for Brick Walls by location isn’t logical & that the system of location categories for brick walls should omit “Family” ... e.g., Category:Georgia Brick Walls would include any profile with its brick wall in Georgia, and Category:Georgia Family Brick Walls would be for any brick wall profile with a LNAB of Georgia. With the top-level categories for by name being Family Brick Walls and by location being just Brick Walls.

I've moved most of the profiles out of English Family Brickwall into England Family Brick Walls (most of them into county Brick Walls categories under that, except for those that only said, "England" for a birthplace). The remaining profiles in the "Brickwall" category are all pre-1500, so I can't edit them.
