He is my paternal 4th GGF, and my connection to him (b. NJ, d, KY) is fairly well established, but I am unable to determine who his father was. Any good clues would be much appreciated.

Thank you so much, Leslie, for your prompt and thoughtful reply. I'm seriously considering the couple you've suggested (i.e., John Stewart (1702-1791, b. Antrim Northern Ireland, d. East Haddam, CT) + Elizabeth Upjohn (1707-1799, b&d East Haddam, CT), but still hesitate because so far I haven't been able to establish them residing in Monmouth County, NJ where David was born, for any period. I'm also considering John Albertus Stewart (1720-1744, b. Gloucester NJ or Sussex, DE, d. Sussex, DE) + Elizabeth Coulter (1728-1773, b&d Sussex, DE) and haven't ruled them out yet.
