I just found this on the profile of a DNA match at 23andme. I don't know if it is true...but someone might want to check it out. It certainly is in keeping with him being in the military.
"We now know that the name Dugas started with the family Coignet, in the Toulouse area, France, from the early 1600, perhaps origin of Lyonnais. My genealogy from Acadia, Canada, climbs up to that date. This certain person, Coignet, distinguished by eminent military services, was given the name "chevalier de St-Louis" in XVI century (1600) , and received a domain called "le domaine du Gas". The family name followed as "Coignet du Gas", and then finally as Dugas. In Acadia, mid 1600, his first name was Abraham Dugas."
