Have you seen today's changes? Status messages and tags for new volunteers.

Hi WikiTreers,

Two improvements just went live.

First, the message that you see when changes are saved is now more clearly differentiated from other status messages and warnings. For one thing, it's now green, while cautionary status messages are yellow and more serious warnings are red.

Speaking of red warnings, there are now more informative messages when there is an edit or merge conflict, i.e. when someone else is editing the same profile as you and they saved their change before you did, or when you are in the middle of editing a profile that was merged into another profile before you saved your change. These types of edit conflict are fairly rare, but they were very frustrating before because you might lose your work. Now it's easier to preserve your changes.

The more significant improvement today, but one that most of you won't see, is a change to how new guest members volunteer to be full Wiki Genealogists.

Before this, a new volunteer had to leave a comment about their interest in genealogy and WikiTree. Now instead of a general comment they enter one or more tags -- surnames, locations or project tags -- and comment about their interest in the specific topic, e.g. why they're interested in that surname, location, or genealogical topic.

To see the tags that new volunteers are entering, check out this feed. If they enter a tag that you're following you will see them in your Wiki Genealogist e-mail update tomorrow.

This is all part of the effort over the past few months to do more with tags in order to help genealogists who share the same interests connect with each other. WikiTree is all about collaboration, and collaboration starts with getting people together.

Onward and upward,

Chris

I'm still new.  Will keep an eye out for this :)
Thanks for the improvements.  The green save message is easier to read compared to the orange!
I know we talked about automatically adding the how_to_wikitree tag to new members, any chance of that happening?   It would be great to have a tag where we can put things that are of a "learning" nature for new members.
What a great idea, Robin!
Wonderful, excellent improvements! I imagine the greeters love you for this.
You are right on target, Debby. It's been a great help to the Greeters!! :-)

This is a fantastic idea, Robin! Of course, that means we need to get busy adding some helpful posts to that tag. ;-)

I think that HOW TO WIKITREEE tag for new members would be a fantastic idea !

The volunteer change looks like something I'm going to make use of.  I realize that finding someone new with an interest just like mine will be rare, but if and when it does occur it will be a pearl of great price.

Chris,

I like the addition of the tags and descriptions on the Volunteer List. Would it be possible to bold the tag names? Right now, even in all caps, the tag names kind of get lost in the sea of text.

Thanks for all you and the team do,

Debi
