Trying to track down great great grandfather and family. Michael J Carey born Ireland about 1851, married to Catherine Gilligan born Ireland about 1850 (her mother Mary Gilligan born Ireland 1823). My father thinks he heard one or both came from Armagh.
Michael J and Catherine migrated Ireland to England (likely separately) some time before 1871 when they married in Warrington, Lancashire, England and had 4 children, Martin J, William J, Mary Ann, and Michael by 1880. Michael J likely emigrated to U.S. alone shortly thereafter. Catherine and 4 children emigrated together, without father Michael J, aboard National Lines Helvetia arriving 14 May 1883.
Catherine's mother Mary Gilligan was a widow in Warrington, Lancashire, England as of 1861 census.
My great grandfather is William J, who married Agnes Waterman and settled in Norwich, CT, USA after he had lived for a time in New York City (They had 3 sons: Edward, Clifford William, and Richard who died as a child). I can't locate any of Michael J's family except William J and his family.
Patriarch Michael J had worked as a "railroad servant" before coming to the U.S. and son William J worked as some type of "maritime engineer" so males may have worked in transportation. Believe the family likely settled at least initially in NYC (Bronx) and perhaps New Jersey. Michael J Carey apparently became a U.S. citizen as son William J was granted U.S. citizenship because Michael J became a U.S. citizen while William J was still a minor. Any info appreciated.
