Researching the Lee line and I am stuck at Andrew Henry Lee, b.1823 in Spartanburg, SC. Some things I find have a Robert Edwin Lee, b.1775 as his father but I cannot find any evidence that there was such a person. I suspect this is wrong. Any help greatly appreciated.

Do you have any additional data on him?   Did he live in South Carolina his whole life, do you know his wife's name, or any brothers or sisters?

Sometimes the best information comes from his death record or will, where you can find deeds to property, then research who owned the property before that person.
My great great grandfather was Andrew H Lee, and I have that he was born in Greenville, S.C.  He moved to Bartow County, Ga. With his son William and William's family.  Andrew wife was named Irena, listed as Rennie in one of the early census documents.  Andrew enlisted in the Confederate army in Lynchburg VA in 1861 and applied for a confederate pension.
Take a look at this...if this is Andrew H Lee, you could ask someone to look at the graves around his for clues.   http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=LEE&GSpartial=1&GSbyrel=all&GSst=12&GScntry=4&GSsr=1&GRid=38466258&

I did find his 1900 census, and his father was born in South Carolina and his mother was born in Virginia.  His wife Renie is also still alive in 1900.   The birth matches this Find a Grave.

I have searched for Andrew Henry Lee on Ancestry and I've found the claims that you stated of him having a father named Robert Edwin Lee. It seems that these profiles have been submitted on Ancestry from personal recollection and I can give you the email of the user that has submitted this if you contact me. Hope this has helped.

Here is a long shot  http://files.usgwarchives.net/sc/spartanburg/history/landrum/spartan5.txt

In the history of Spartanburg, there is a Robert Lee listed on page 660 and a R.E. Lee on page 382   The URL above takes you to the page with information on the woman who has the book and will do look ups for you.
