Comparing & merging

Ok I started doing a compare then merge thing but I come up with following:

"Humphrey Turner (Turner-13827) and Humphrey Turner (Turner-40) are currently set as Unmerged Matches to indicate that the two profiles are not ready to be merged yet. “

I thought at first that it was because they were pre-1700, but then I reread the instructions and that does not seem to be the case. So, looked some more and came across the message “Turner-40 and Turner-13827 do not represent the same person because: They are not the same. “ However no explanation or sources are given.

Then I see one has parents listed (another discussion in itself) while the other doesn't, is that a factor?

So then I think that maybe the wives don't match, but they do in my book (even though there is discussion stating they don't (again no documentation).

Then I check the children, one has 11 children (I think this is wrong) and the other has only one, both Humphrey TURNERs having a son Nathaniel, one of them being the wrong Nathaniel. So is this the reason there can't be a merge?

Do you have to perform merges on each individual for the initial merge to take? If the two Humphreys merge, do the wives also merge and what about the two Nathaniels who are obviously two different people? Can someone clarify this? Thanks, Jim

On the last bit, you only merge one profile at a time, so it comes out with two wives and two sons called Nathaniel.  Then you deal with them.

If there are alternative parents, keeping both isn't an option, so the merger has to decide which to disconnect.  If the alternatives are duplicates, many people prefer to merge them first (though the most efficient merger in the business works the other way).
Again, thank you.

To the Change logs.

1 Somebody imports a gedcom

2 A month later, finds he's unwittingly created a duplicate and proposes a merge

3 This appears in the feed of everybody in the TL of the older profile.  One of those people rejects the merge

4 Then one of the PMs of the older profile has a look and sets an Unmerged Match.

5 Usually nothing happens now.

Motivations can only be guessed at.

The basic problem I think is that the two Nathaniels are different people, and the new Humphrey and Lydia are the internet's attempt to provide the new Nat with some parents.  So he needs to be detached from his parents, but then they become surplus to requirements.

And of course it's obvious where they were conjured up from.

I think you need the project to unjam this one.  Edit your post to add the PGM tag.
