My great-great grandfather was Carl (Charles) Reich who was said to be born somewhere in Switzerland in 1830, but there is some doubt attached to those facts. Anyway, he and his family came to the USA (Wisconsin) in the 1870s.  There was speculation that he may have come from a German state to Switzerland to avoid being drafted into the military.  Not sure.
