My mother was not married to my father.who subsequently had children from 2 other marriages. How does one show my mother on his profile but not as a wife.

- a link like this can be added in the biography field

As you have both parents listed on your profile, you obviously show up as a child of both.  It would be up to you whether you just included the information and/or a link in the bios as Vincent suggested OR if you chose to link them as spouses - and then in the marriage information fields as to location, you could type in 'unmarried'?
Thank you.

I have sent a mail to info@wikitree.com with a suggestion on this subject.

In short this is to rather show such relationships as 'Partner of' irrespective of married/unmarried. If a married date is present then display can optionally show as 'Married to'.
Good suggestion, Errol.  Several people have complained of the same thing - the inability to show an unmarried couple who had children together as connected in the data section.

Making it show as a marriage only if a marriage date is present won't work, though - in many cases, we know two people were married but don't have date or place information about the marriage.  I would like to see an extra field, much like the certainty fields we have for dates and places, where we would could characterize the relationship by selecting married, partners, other, (more options???)

With my ancestor, I decided not to show all three on his profile. I have shown the two wives (Rebecca Proffitt and Rebecca Blankenship) with their corresponding marriage dates.  In William Stacy's biography, I listed that he had two wives and one mistress.  His son, my ancestor, links both to him (William) and to the mistress.  William had an incredible number of children, many of whom had genetic disorders.

Had I chosen to do so, I could have listed all three on his profile, but listed no marriage date on the mistress.

As I understand it, current policy says that we should not connect unmarried partners in the spouse data section of a profile. They can be documented in the biography, but they should not be connected as spouses.

Omitting a date of marriage does not normally indicate that the couple weren't married -- most commonly it means either that the marriage date is unknown or that the profile creator hasn't gotten around to adding it yet.
Ellen,

I believe you are correct.  I made a decision not to list the mistress on the profile, but only to include the two wives and their marriage dates.

I suppose in many cases where there is a mistress involved, a timeline might be the best way to handle it in a profile. One can therefore pinpoint dates which might be needed.  It could also be done in a biography per se.

I probably should check some of my other profiles.  I know some geneogy software allows one to indicate "Y" is not a spouse.  I know one can indicate that a person has no spouses and still indicate that such a person has had children.
