Is Private privacy level allowed for deceased people with no living children?

I thought I'd seen something somewhere saying that the various Private settings were only meant for either living people or dead people who still have living children/parents or grandparents/siblings/spouses, but there's nothing on http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Privacy that actually says this. Is there actually anything in WT policy limiting the Private settings to these cases? (And if so, can they be added to the main Privacy page?)

I think the "Private" (Red) privacy category should be severely discouraged for deceased people without living first-degree relatives. Those people should be no more private that "Private With Public Family Tree" so that there will be some chance of seeing how they connect to other people in the tree.

I concur.  There is someone who currently has a slew of 18th century profiles marked red so no one can even see the data.

On the Privacy Option page on a profile it states that Private is "The default for living people and non-living people when added as nuclear relatives of living people."  So, if I understand correctly, if you set up a profile for your living mother's dead sister, the sister's profile will default to Private.

To add to this, privacy controls are for just that, privacy. Some families may be much more restrictive on their information being available openly on the internet and that is their prerogative. Once they reach 200 years old, as Dale answered, they have to be Open. Up until then, it's the discretion of the Profile Manager(s).

All profiles for those born over 200 years ago must be Open. Unlisted is only supposed to be for those under 13 years old. Any living person can not be open. Other than that any privacy setting is allowed, but there are recommendations on how to use them somewhere.

Living persons also can't be "Public."

On the About Privacy page, it says, "Any profile of a deceased person without any sensitive information in it should be Open."

It's under the description of the Open setting at the bottom.

But many people don't follow this.
